1 Ask the LORD for rain in springtime; the LORD makes the storm clouds, and He will give everyone showers of rain and crops in the field. Ask rain from the LORD in the season of the spring rain, from the LORD who makes the storm clouds, and he will give them showers of rain, to everyone the vegetation in the field. Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; <i>so</i> the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field. Ask for rain from the LORD at the time of the spring rain— The LORD who makes the storm winds; And He will give them showers of rain, vegetation in the field to <i>each</i> person. Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime; it is the LORD who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone.
2 For idols speak deceit and diviners see illusions; they tell FALSE dreams and offer empty comfort. Therefore the people wander like sheep, oppressed for lack of a shepherd. For the household gods utter nonsense, and the diviners see lies; they tell false dreams and give empty consolation. Therefore the people wander like sheep; they are afflicted for lack of a shepherd. For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because <i>there was</i> no shepherd. For the household idols speak deception, And the diviners see an illusion And tell deceitful dreams; They comfort in vain. Therefore <i>the people</i> wander like sheep, They are wretched because there is no shepherd. The idols speak deceitfully, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain. Therefore the people wander like sheep oppressed for lack of a shepherd.
3 “My anger burns against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders. For the LORD of Hosts attends to His flock, the house of Judah; He will make them like His royal steed in battle. “My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the LORD of hosts cares for his flock, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle. “My anger is kindled against the shepherds, And I will punish the male goats; For the LORD of armies has visited His flock, the house of Judah, And will make them like His majestic horse in battle. “My anger burns against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the LORD Almighty will care for his flock, the people of Judah, and make them like a proud horse in battle.
4 The cornerstone will come from Judah, the tent peg from him, as well as the battle bow and every ruler together. From him shall come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler—all of them together. Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together. “From them will come the cornerstone, From them the tent peg, From them the bow of battle, From them every tyrant, <i>all of them</i> together. From Judah will come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler.
5 They will be like mighty men in battle, trampling the enemy in the mire of the streets. They will fight because the LORD is with them, and they will put the horsemen to shame. They shall be like mighty men in battle, trampling the foe in the mud of the streets; they shall fight because the LORD is with them, and they shall put to shame the riders on horses. And they shall be as mighty <i>men</i>, which tread down <i>their enemies</i> in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD <i>is</i> with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded. “And they will be like warriors, Trampling down <i>the enemy</i> in the mud of the streets in battle; And they will fight, because the LORD <i>will be</i> with them; And the riders on horses will be put to shame. Together they will be like warriors in battle trampling their enemy into the mud of the streets. They will fight because the LORD is with them, and they will put the enemy horsemen to shame.
6 I will strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them, and they will be as though I had not rejected them. For I am the LORD their God, and I will answer them. “I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph. I will bring them back because I have compassion on them, and they shall be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the LORD their God and I will answer them. And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I <i>am</i> the LORD their God, and will hear them. “And I will strengthen the house of Judah, And I will save the house of Joseph, And I will bring them back, Because I have had compassion on them; And they will be as though I had not rejected them, For I am the LORD their God and I will answer them. “I will strengthen Judah and save the tribes of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them. They will be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the LORD their God and I will answer them.
7 Ephraim will be like a mighty man, and their hearts will be glad as with wine. Their children will see it and be joyful; their hearts will rejoice in the LORD. Then Ephraim shall become like a mighty warrior, and their hearts shall be glad as with wine. Their children shall see it and be glad; their hearts shall rejoice in the LORD. And <i>they of</i> Ephraim shall be like a mighty <i>man</i>, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see <i>it</i>, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD. “Ephraim will be like a warrior, And their heart will be joyful as if <i>from</i> wine; Indeed, their children will see <i>it</i> and be joyful, Their heart will rejoice in the LORD. The Ephraimites will become like warriors, and their hearts will be glad as with wine. Their children will see it and be joyful; their hearts will rejoice in the LORD.
8 I will whistle for them to gather, for I have redeemed them; and they will be as numerous as they once were. “I will whistle for them and gather them in, for I have redeemed them, and they shall be as many as they were before. I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased. “I will whistle for them and gather them together, For I have redeemed them; And they will be as numerous as they were before. I will signal for them and gather them in. Surely I will redeem them; they will be as numerous as before.
9 Though I sow them among the nations, they will remember Me in distant lands; they and their children will live and return. Though I scattered them among the nations, yet in far countries they shall remember me, and with their children they shall live and return. And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again. “When I scatter them among the peoples, They will remember Me in distant countries, And they with their children will live and come back. Though I scatter them among the peoples, yet in distant lands they will remember me. They and their children will survive, and they will return.
10 I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them from Assyria. I will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon until no more room is found for them. I will bring them home from the land of Egypt, and gather them from Assyria, and I will bring them to the land of Gilead and to Lebanon, till there is no room for them. I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and <i>place</i> shall not be found for them. “I will bring them back from the land of Egypt And gather them from Assyria; And I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon Until no <i>room</i> can be found for them. I will bring them back from Egypt and gather them from Assyria. I will bring them to Gilead and Lebanon, and there will not be room enough for them.
11 They will pass through the sea of distress and strike the waves of the sea; all the depths of the Nile will dry up. The pride of Assyria will be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt will depart. He shall pass through the sea of troubles and strike down the waves of the sea, and all the depths of the Nile shall be dried up. The pride of Assyria shall be laid low, and the scepter of Egypt shall depart. And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away. “And they will pass through the sea of distress And He will strike the waves in the sea, So that all the depths of the Nile will dry up; And the pride of Assyria will be brought down, And the scepter of Egypt will depart. They will pass through the sea of trouble; the surging sea will be subdued and all the depths of the Nile will dry up. Assyria’s pride will be brought down and Egypt’s scepter will pass away.
12 I will strengthen them in the LORD, and in His name they will walk,” declares the LORD. I will make them strong in the LORD, and they shall walk in his name,” declares the LORD. And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD. “And I will strengthen them in the LORD, And in His name they will walk,” declares the LORD. I will strengthen them in the LORD and in his name they will live securely,” declares the LORD.
