1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband, a man of great wealth, from the family of Elimelech. And His name was Boaz. Now Naomi had a relative of her husband’s, a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a man of standing from the clan of Elimelek, whose name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Let me go, please, to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after one in whose eyes I may find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.” Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.”
3 And she went, and she came, and she gleaned in the field after the reapers. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the family of Elimelech. So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelech. So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.
4 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said to the reapers, “YHWH be with you⁺!” And they answered him, “YHWH blesses you.” And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem. And he said to the reapers, “The LORD be with you!” And they answered, “The LORD bless you.” Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, “The LORD be with you!” “The LORD bless you!” they answered.
5 And Boaz said to his young man who was set over the reapers, “To whom is this young woman?” Then Boaz said to his young man who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?” Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters, “Who does that young woman belong to?”
6 And the servant who was set over the reapers answered and said, “A young woman, a Moabitess, she is, the one returning with Naomi from a field of Moab. And the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered, “She is the young Moabite woman, who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. The overseer replied, “She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi.
7 And she said, ‘Let me glean, please, and gather among the sheaves after the reapers.’ And she came and remained from the morning and until now, though she rested in the house a little.” She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers.’ So she came, and she has continued from early morning until now, except for a short rest.” She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.”
8 And Boaz said to Ruth, “Will you not listen, my daughter? Do not go to glean in another field, and also do not go from this place, and thus you shall cling together with my young women. Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women. So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me.
9 Let your eyes be in the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not commanded the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, you shall go to the vessels, and you shall drink from what the young men draw.” Let your eyes be on the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn.” Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”
10 And she fell on her face and she bowed herself to the earth and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me though I am a foreigner?” Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?” At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me—a foreigner?”
11 And Boaz answered and said to her, “It has surely been declared to me all that you have done with your mother-in-law after the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and have come to a people whom you did not know yesterday and the day before yesterday. But Boaz answered her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before. Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before.
12 May YHWH repay your work, and may you receive your full wages from YHWH, God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” The LORD repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!” May the LORD repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
13 And she said, “Let me find favor in your eyes, my lord. For you have comforted me and have spoken to the heart of your maidservant, and I am not like one of your maidservants.” Then she said, “I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not one of your servants.” “May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,” she said. “You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servants.”
14 And Boaz said to her at the time of food, “Come here and eat from the bread, and dip your piece of bread in the vinegar.” And she sat beside the reapers, and he passed to her roasted grain, and she ate and was satisfied, and she had some left over. And at mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come here and eat some bread and dip your morsel in the wine.” So she sat beside the reapers, and he passed to her roasted grain. And she ate until she was satisfied, and she had some left over. At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.” When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over.
15 And she rose up to glean, and Boaz commanded his young men, saying, “Even among the sheaves let her glean, and do not shame her. When she rose to glean, Boaz instructed his young men, saying, “Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her. As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her.
16 And also you⁺ shall surely draw out for her from the bundles and you⁺ shall leave them, and shall let her glean. And you⁺ shall not rebuke her.” And also pull out some from the bundles for her and leave it for her to glean, and do not rebuke her.” Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”
17 And she gleaned in the field until the evening. And she beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley. So she gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.
18 And she took it up and went into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned. And she brought out and gave to her what she had left over from being satisfied. May the one who took notice of you be blessed.” And she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, and said, “The name of the man with whom I worked today is Boaz.” And her mother-in-law said to her, “Where did you glean today? And where have you worked? Blessed be the man who took notice of you.” So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked and said, “The man’s name with whom I worked today is Boaz.” Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!” Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.
20 And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “Blessed be he by YHWH, who has not forsaken His kindness with the living and with the dead.” And Naomi said to her, “The man is a relation of ours. He is one of our kinsman-redeemers.” And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the LORD, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!” Naomi also said to her, “The man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeemers.” “The LORD bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.”
21 And Ruth the Moabitess said, “Also surely he said to me, ‘With the young men who are to me you shall cling, until that they have finished all the harvest that is unto me.’” And Ruth the Moabite said, “Besides, he said to me, ‘You shall keep close by my young men until they have finished all my harvest.’” Then Ruth the Moabite said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’”
22 And Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, and they will not fall upon you in another field.” And Naomi said to Ruth, her daughter-in-law, “It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, lest in another field you be assaulted.” Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.”
23 And she clung with the young women of Boaz, to glean until the end of the barley harvest and the wheat harvest. And she dwelt with her mother-in-law. So she kept close to the young women of Boaz, gleaning until the end of the barley and wheat harvests. And she lived with her mother-in-law. So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.
