For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters are up to my neck. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me. I have sunk into the miry depths, where there is no footing; I have drifted into deep waters, where the flood engulfs me. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.
I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God.
Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal. Those who hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me—my enemies for no reason. Though I did not steal, I must repay. More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore?
You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you. You know my folly, O God, and my guilt is not hidden from You. O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me. May those who hope in You not be ashamed through me, O Lord GOD of Hosts; may those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel. Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.
For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face. For I have endured scorn for Your sake, and shame has covered my face. For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face.
I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children; I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sons, I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons.
for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me. For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; I wept and fasted, but it brought me reproach. When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.
when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. I made sackcloth my clothing, and I was sport to them. When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.
Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of drunkards. I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me.
But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation. But my prayer to You, O LORD, is for a time of favor. In Your abundant loving devotion, O God, answer me with Your sure salvation. But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters. Rescue me from the mire and do not let me sink; deliver me from my foes and out of the deep waters. Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.
Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me. Do not let the floods engulf me or the depths swallow me up; let not the Pit close its mouth over me. Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me.
Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me. Answer me, O LORD, for Your loving devotion is good; turn to me in keeping with Your great compassion. Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble. Hide not Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me.
Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes. Draw near to my soul and redeem me; ransom me because of my foes. Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies!
You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. You know my reproach, my shame and disgrace. All my adversaries are before You. You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you.
Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found no one. Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.
They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst. They poisoned my food with gall and gave me vinegar to quench my thirst. They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap. May their table become a snare; may it be a retribution and a trap. Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.
May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually.
Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them. Pour out Your wrath upon them, and let Your burning anger overtake them. Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them.
May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.
For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. For they persecute the one You struck and recount the pain of those You wounded. For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.
Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. Add iniquity to their iniquity; let them not share in Your righteousness. Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you.
May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous. May they be blotted out of the Book of Life and not listed with the righteous. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
But as for me, afflicted and in pain— may your salvation, God, protect me. But I am in pain and distress; let Your salvation protect me, O God. But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high!
I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. I will praise God’s name in song and exalt Him with thanksgiving. I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. And this will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs.
The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live! The humble will see and rejoice. You who seek God, let your hearts be revived! When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise His captive people. For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.
Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them. Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them.
for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it. For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it;
the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there. The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will settle in it. the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it.
