1 TO THE OVERSEER. [SET] ON “LILIES.” BY DAVID. Save me, O God, for waters have come to the soul. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I have sunk in deep mire, || And there is no standing, || I have come into the depths of the waters, || And a flood has overflown me. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.
3 I have been wearied with my calling, || My throat has been burned, || My eyes have been consumed, waiting for my God. I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
4 Those hating me without cause || Have been more than the hairs of my head, || Mighty have been my destroyers, || My lying enemies, || That which I did not take away—I bring back. More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.
5 O God, You have known || Concerning my overturn, || And my desolations have not been hid from You. O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you.
6 Do not let those waiting on You be ashamed because of me, || O Lord, YHWH of Hosts, || Do not let those seeking You || Blush because of me, || O God of Israel. Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me.
7 For because of You I have borne reproach, || Shame has covered my face. For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face. For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face.
8 I have been a stranger to my brother, || And a foreigner to sons of my mother. I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons. I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children;
9 For [my] zeal for Your house has consumed me, || And the reproaches of Your reproachers || Have fallen on me. For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
10 And I weep in the fasting of my soul, || And it is for a reproach to me. When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn;
11 And I make my clothing sackcloth, || And I am for an allegory to them. When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me.
12 Those sitting at the gate meditate concerning me, || And those drinking strong drink, || Play on instruments. I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.
13 And my prayer [is] to You, O YHWH, || A time of good pleasure, O God, || In the abundance of Your kindness, || Answer me in the truth of Your salvation. But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Deliver me from the mire, and do not let me sink, || Let me be delivered from those hating me, || And from deep places of waters. Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.
15 Do not let a flood of waters overflow me, || Nor let the deep swallow me up, || Nor let the pit shut her mouth on me. Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.
16 Answer me, O YHWH, for Your kindness [is] good, || Turn to me according to the abundance of Your mercies, Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.
17 And do not hide Your face from Your servant, || For I am in distress—hurry, answer me. Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.
18 Be near to my soul—redeem it, || Ransom me because of my enemies. Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies! Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes.
19 You have known my reproach, || And my shame, and my blushing, || All my adversaries [are] before You. You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you. You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.
20 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am sick, || And I look for a bemoaner, and there is none, || And for comforters, and I have found none. Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.
21 And they give gall for my food, || And cause me to drink vinegar for my thirst. They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
22 Their table before them is for a snare, || And for a repayment—for a trap. Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap.
23 Their eyes are darkened from seeing, || And their loins continually shake You. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually. May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.
24 Pour Your indignation on them, || And the fierceness of Your anger seizes them. Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them. Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them.
25 Their tower is desolated, || There is no dweller in their tents. May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents. May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
26 For they have pursued him [whom] You have struck, || And recount of the pain of Your pierced ones. For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt.
27 Give punishment for their iniquity, || And they do not enter into Your righteousness. Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation.
28 They are blotted out of the scroll of life, || And are not written with the righteous. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.
29 And I [am] afflicted and pained, || Your salvation, O God, sets me on high. But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high! But as for me, afflicted and in pain— may your salvation, God, protect me.
30 I praise the Name of God with a song, || And I magnify Him with thanksgiving, I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
31 And it is better to YHWH than an ox, || A bullock—horned [and] hoofed. This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves.
32 The humble have seen—they rejoice, || You who seek God—and your heart lives. When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live!
33 For YHWH listens to the needy, || And He has not despised His bound ones. For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners. The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.
34 The heavens and earth praise Him, || Seas, and every moving thing in them. Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them. Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them,
35 For God saves Zion, || And builds the cities of Judah, || And they have dwelt there, and possess it. For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it; for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it;
36 And the seed of His servants inherit it, || And those loving His Name dwell in it! the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it. the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.
