1 For the one directing. According to “The Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to the soul. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David. Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in the mire of the deep, and there is no place to stand; I have come into the depths of the waters, and a flood washes over me. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.
3 I have grown weary with my calling out; my throat is dry; my eyes fail, waiting for my God. I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
4 Those hating me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those seeking my destruction, my enemies with deception! That which I did not steal, I must then return. More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.
5 O God, You know of my foolishness, and my guilt is not hidden from You. O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. You, God, know my folly; my guilt is not hidden from you.
6 Do not let those waiting on You come to shame because of me, O Lord YHWH of hosts; do not let those seeking You be disgraced because of me, O God of Israel! Let not those who hope in you be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. Lord, the LORD Almighty, may those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me; God of Israel, may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me.
7 It is for Your sake that I have carried scorn, and shame has covered my face. For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face. For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face.
8 I have become a stranger to my brothers, and a foreigner to the sons of my mother. I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons. I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother’s children;
9 For zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those insulting You have fallen on me. For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
10 I even wept in the fasting of my soul, and it was for a reproach to me. When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn;
11 I made my clothing sackcloth, and I became to them as a byword. When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me.
12 Those sitting at the gate meditate against me, and I am the song of those drinking wine. I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.
13 And I—my prayer is to You, O YHWH; in the time of favor, O God, in the abundance of Your loving devotion, may You answer me in the truth of Your salvation! But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness. But I pray to you, LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Deliver me from the mire, that I should not sink! May I be delivered from those hating me, and out of the depths of the waters. Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.
15 Do not let the flood of waters engulf me, and do not let the deep swallow me up, and do not let the pit shut its mouth over me! Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.
16 Answer me, O YHWH, for good is Your loving devotion; according to the abundance of Your tender mercies, turn to me. Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. Answer me, LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.
17 And do not hide Your face from Your servant, for distress is unto me; hurry to answer me! Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.
18 Draw near to my soul and redeem it; on account of my enemies, may You ransom me. Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies! Come near and rescue me; deliver me because of my foes.
19 You know my scorn, and my shame, and my disgrace; all my adversaries are before You. You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you. You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.
20 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am sick. And I looked for a bemoaner, and there was none, and for comforters, and I found none. Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.
21 And they gave gall for my food, and for my thirst they made me drink vinegar. They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink. They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
22 May their table before them become a snare, and for a recompense—for a trap! Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap.
23 May their eyes grow dark from seeing, and their backs be bent forever! Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually. May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.
24 Pour out upon them Your indignation, and may the burning of Your anger overtake them! Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them. Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them.
25 May their encampment become desolate; may there be no one dwelling in their tents. May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents. May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
26 For You—the one whom You struck—they pursue, and the pain of those You pierced they recount. For they persecute him whom you have struck down, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded. For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt.
27 May You add iniquity to their iniquity, and do not let them come into Your righteousness! Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you. Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation.
28 May they be blotted out from the book of the living, and do not let them be written with the righteous! Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.
29 And I am afflicted and pained; may Your salvation, O God, set me on high. But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high! But as for me, afflicted and in pain— may your salvation, God, protect me.
30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will I magnify Him with thanksgiving. I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
31 And it is better to YHWH than an ox, a bull horned and hoofed. This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves.
32 The humble have seen—they rejoice—you seeking God, your⁺ heart shall live! When the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live!
33 For YHWH listens to the needy, and he has not despised His captives. For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners. The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.
34 Let the heavens and earth shout praise to Him, the seas, and every moving thing in them. Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them. Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them,
35 For God will save Zion, and He will rebuild the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it. For God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it; for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it;
36 And the seed of His servants will inherit it, and those loving His name will settle in it. the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it. the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.
