But seeing the crowds, he went up into the mountain, and having sat down, his disciples came to him; Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,
and, having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying, And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: and he began to teach them. He said:
Blessed [are] the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed they who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed the merciful, for they shall find mercy. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed the peace-makers, for they shall be called sons of God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed they who are persecuted on account of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye when they may reproach and persecute you, and say every wicked thing against you, lying, for my sake. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and exult, for your reward is great in the heavens; for thus have they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have become insipid, wherewith shall it be salted? It is no longer fit for anything but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot by men. “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
Ye are the light of the world: a city situated on the top of a mountain cannot be hid. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do [men] light a lamp and put it under the bushel, but upon the lamp-stand, and it shines for all who are in the house. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Let your light thus shine before men, so that they may see your upright works, and glorify your Father who is in the heavens. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Think not that I am come to make void the law or the prophets; I am not come to make void, but to fulfil. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
For verily I say unto you, Until the heaven and the earth pass away, one iota or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all come to pass. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
Whosoever then shall do away with one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall practise and teach [them], he shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpass [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of the heavens. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill; but whosoever shall kill shall be subject to the judgment. “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’
But I say unto you, that every one that is lightly angry with his brother shall be subject to the judgment; but whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be subject to [be called before] the sanhedrim; but whosoever shall say, Fool, shall be subject to the penalty of the hell of fire. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
If therefore thou shouldest offer thy gift at the altar, and there shouldest remember that thy brother has something against thee, So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you,
leave there thy gift before the altar, and first go, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
Make friends with thine adverse party quickly, whilst thou art in the way with him; lest some time the adverse party deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.
Verily I say to thee, Thou shalt in no wise come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
But I say unto you, that every one who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
But if thy right eye be a snare to thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
And if thy right hand be a snare to thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
It has been said too, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a letter of divorce. “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’
But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for cause of fornication, makes her commit adultery, and whosoever marries one that is put away commits adultery. But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Again, ye have heard that it has been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt render to the Lord what thou hast sworn. “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’
But I say unto you, Do not swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is [the] throne of God; But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
nor by the earth, because it is [the] footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is [the] city of the great King. or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.
Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
But let your word be Yea, yea; Nay, nay; but what is more than these is from evil. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Ye have heard that it has been said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
But I say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other; But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
and to him that would go to law with thee and take thy body coat, leave him thy cloak also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
And whoever will compel thee to go one mile, go with him two. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
To him that asks of thee give, and from him that desires to borrow of thee turn not away. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Ye have heard that it has been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, [bless those who curse you,] do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who [insult you and] persecute you, But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
that ye may be [the] sons of your Father who is in [the] heavens; for he makes his sun rise on evil and good, and sends rain on just and unjust. so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
For if ye should love those who love you, what reward have ye? Do not also the tax-gatherers the same? For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
And if ye should salute your brethren only, what do ye extraordinary? Do not also the Gentiles the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
Be ye therefore perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
