Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν παρῃτοῦντο | Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. | Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. |
ἦν δὲ ὁ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν | And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. | A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. |
καὶ ἀναβὰς ὁ ὄχλος ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς | And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. | The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. |
Ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων | And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” | “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, |
ἐγίνωσκεν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παραδεδώκεισαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς | For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. | knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. |
