1 After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, because he didn't want to travel in Judea, since the Jewish leaders there were trying to kill him. After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.
2 Now the Jewish Festival of Tents was approaching. Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near,
3 So his brothers told him, |You should leave this place and go to Judea, so that your disciples can see the actions that you're doing, So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.
4 since no one acts in secret if he wants to be known publicly. If you're going to do these things, you should reveal yourself to the world!| For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”
5 Not even his brothers believed in him. For not even his brothers believed in him. For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
6 Jesus told them, |My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its actions are evil. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.
8 Go up to the festival yourselves. I am not going to this festival yet, because my time hasn't fully come yet.| You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.”
9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee. After saying this, he remained in Galilee. After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10 But after his brothers had gone up to the festival, he went up himself, not openly but, as it were, in secret. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.
11 The Jewish leaders kept looking for him at the festival, asking, |Where is that man?| The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”
12 And there was a great deal of discussion about him among the crowds. Some were saying, |He is a good man,| while others were saying, |No, he is deceiving the crowds!| And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”
13 Nevertheless, no one would speak openly about him because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.
14 Halfway through the festival, Jesus went up to the Temple and began teaching. About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.
15 The Jewish leaders were astonished and remarked, |How can this man be so educated when he has never gone to school?| The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”
16 Jesus replied to them, |My teaching is not mine but comes from the one who sent me. So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.
17 If anyone wants to do his will, he'll know whether this teaching is from God or whether I'm speaking on my own. If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.
18 The one who speaks on his own seeks his own praise. But the one who seeks the praise of him who sent him is genuine, and there's nothing false in him. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.
19 Moses gave you the Law, didn't he? Yet none of you is keeping the Law. Why are you trying to kill me?| Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”
20 The crowd answered, |You have a demon! Who is trying to kill you?| The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21 Jesus answered them, |I performed one action, and all of you are astonished. Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
22 Moses gave you circumcision—not that it is from Moses, but from the Patriarchs—and so you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath.
23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man perfectly well on the Sabbath? If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath?
24 Stop judging by appearances, but judge with righteous judgment!| Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
25 Then some of the people of Jerusalem began saying, |This is the man they are trying to kill, isn't it? Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
26 And look, he is speaking in public, and they are not saying anything to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah? And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?
27 We know where this man comes from. But when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he comes from.| But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28 At this point Jesus, still teaching in the Temple, shouted, |So you know me and know where I've come from? I haven't come on my own accord. But the one who sent me is true, and he's the one you don't know. So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,
29 I know him because I've come from him, and he sent me.| I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”
30 Then the Jewish leaders tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come. So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
31 However, many in the crowd believed in him. They kept saying, |When the Messiah comes, he won't do more signs than this man has done, will he?| Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?” Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd debating these things about him, so the high priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest Jesus. The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33 Then Jesus said, |I'll be with you only a little while longer, and then I'm going back to the one who sent me. Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me.
34 You'll look for me but won't find me. And where I am, you cannot come.| You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
35 Then the Jewish leaders asked one another, |Where does this man intend to go that we won't be able to find him? Surely he's not going to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he? The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
36 What does this statement mean that he said, 'You'll look for me but won't find me,' and, 'Where I am, you cannot come'?| What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?” What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, |If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.
38 The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have rivers of living water flowing from his heart.| Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
39 Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who were believing in him were to receive, because the Spirit was not yet present and Jesus had not yet been glorified. Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 When they heard these words, some in the crowd were saying, |This really is the Prophet,| When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”
41 while others were saying, |This is the Messiah!| But some were saying, |The Messiah doesn't come from Galilee, does he? Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?
42 Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah is from David's family and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?| Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”
43 So there was a division in the crowd because of him. So there was a division among the people over him. Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.
44 Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid hands on him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
45 Then the officers returned to the high priests and Pharisees, who asked them, |Why didn't you bring him?| The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46 The officers answered, |No man ever spoke like that!| The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47 Then the Pharisees replied to them, |You haven't been deceived, too, have you? The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? “You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted.
48 None of the authorities or Pharisees has believed in him, have they? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?
49 But this mob that does not know the Law—they're under a curse!| But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50 One of their own, Nicodemus (the man who had previously met with Jesus), asked them, Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,
51 |Surely our Law does not condemn a person without first hearing from him and finding out what he is doing, does it?| “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
52 They answered him, |You aren't from Galilee, too, are you? Search and see that no prophet comes from Galilee.| They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.” They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
53 Then all of them went to their own homes. [[They went each to his own house, Then they all went home,
