1	And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee, for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.	After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.	After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.
2	Now the tabernacles, the feast of the Jews, was near.	Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand.	But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near,
3	His brethren therefore said to him, Remove hence and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou doest;	So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.	Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.
4	for no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be [known] in public. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world:	For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”	No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”
5	for neither did his brethren believe on him.	For not even his brothers believed in him.	For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
6	Jesus therefore says to them, My time is not yet come, but your time is always ready.	Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.	Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.
7	The world cannot hate you, but me it hates, because I bear witness concerning it that its works are evil.	The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.	The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.
8	Ye, go ye up to this feast. I go not up to this feast, for my time is not yet fulfilled.	You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.”	You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.”
9	Having said these things to them he abode in Galilee.	After saying this, he remained in Galilee.	After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10	But when his brethren had gone up, then he himself also went up to the feast, not openly, but as in secret.	But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.	However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.
11	The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?	The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?”	Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”
12	And there was much murmuring concerning him among the crowds. Some said, He is [a] good [man]; others said, No; but he deceives the crowd.	And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”	Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”
13	However, no one spoke openly concerning him on account of [their] fear of the Jews.	Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.	But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.
14	But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.	About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.	Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.
15	The Jews therefore wondered, saying, How knows this [man] letters, having never learned?	The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”	The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”
16	Jesus therefore answered them and said, My doctrine is not mine, but [that] of him that has sent me.	So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.	Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.
17	If any one desire to practise his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is of God, or [that] I speak from myself.	If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.	Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.
18	He that speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that has sent him, he is true, and unrighteousness is not in him.	The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.	Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.
19	Has not Moses given you the law, and no one of you practises the law? Why do ye seek to kill me?	Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”	Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”
20	The crowd answered [and said], Thou hast a demon: who seeks to kill thee?	The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”	“You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21	Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all wonder.	Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.	Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed.
22	Therefore Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and ye circumcise a man on sabbath.	Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.	Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath.
23	If a man receives circumcision on sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be violated, are ye angry with me because I have made a man entirely sound on sabbath?	If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well?	Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath?
24	Judge not according to sight, but judge righteous judgment.	Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”	Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
25	Some therefore of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?	Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?	At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?
26	and behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers then indeed recognised that this is the Christ?	And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?	Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah?
27	But [as to] this [man] we know whence he is. Now [as to] the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is.	But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.”	But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28	Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know.	So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know.	Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,
29	I know him, because I am from him, and he has sent me.	I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”	but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”
30	They sought therefore to take him; and no one laid his hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.	So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.	At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
31	But many of the crowd believed on him, and said, Will the Christ, when he comes, do more signs than those which this [man] has done?	Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”	Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
32	The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they might take him.	The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.	The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33	Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and I go to him that has sent me.	Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.	Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me.
34	Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me], and where I am ye cannot come.	You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”	You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”
35	The Jews therefore said to one another, Where is he about to go that we shall not find him? Is he about to go to the dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?	The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?	The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
36	What word is this which he said, Ye shall seek me and shall not find [me]; and where I am ye cannot come?	What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”	What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
37	In the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.	On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.	On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.
38	He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.	Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”	Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
39	But this he said concerning the Spirit, which they that believed on him were about to receive; for [the] Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.	Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.	By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40	[Some] out of the crowd therefore, having heard this word, said, This is truly the prophet.	When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”	On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”
41	Others said, This is the Christ. Others said, Does then the Christ come out of Galilee?	Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?	Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?
42	Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?	Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”	Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”
43	There was a division therefore in the crowd on account of him.	So there was a division among the people over him.	Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.
44	But some of them desired to take him, but no one laid hands upon him.	Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.	Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
45	The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him?	The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?”	Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46	The officers answered, Never man spoke thus, as this man [speaks].	The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”	“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied.
47	The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also deceived?	The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?	“You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted.
48	Has any one of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?	Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?	“Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?
49	But this crowd, which does not know the law, are accursed.	But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”	No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50	Nicodemus says to them (being one of themselves),	Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them,	Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked,
51	Does our law judge a man before it have first heard from himself, and know what he does?	“Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”	“Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
52	They answered and said to him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look, that no prophet arises out of Galilee.	They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”	They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
53	And every one went to his home.	[[They went each to his own house,	Then they all went home,
