1 Then Job answered: Then Job answered and said: And Job answered and said, Then Job responded, Then Job replied:
2 “Truly then you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die! “No doubt you are the people, and wisdom will die with you. No doubt but ye <i>are</i> the people, and wisdom shall die with you. “Truly then you are the people, And with you wisdom will die! “Doubtless you are the only people who matter, and wisdom will die with you!
3 But I also have a mind; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these? But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these? But I have understanding as well as you; I <i>am</i> not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these? “But I have intelligence as well as you; I am not inferior to you. And who does not know such things as these? But I have a mind as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know all these things?
4 I am a laughingstock to my friends, though I called on God, and He answered. The righteous and upright man is a laughingstock. I am a laughingstock to my friends; I, who called to God and he answered me, a just and blameless man, am a laughingstock. I am <i>as</i> one mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright <i>man is</i> laughed to scorn. “I am a joke to my friends, The one who called on God and He answered him; The just <i>and</i> blameless <i>man</i> is a joke. “I have become a laughingstock to my friends, though I called on God and he answered— a mere laughingstock, though righteous and blameless!
5 The one at ease scorns misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are slipping. In the thought of one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; it is ready for those whose feet slip. He that is ready to slip with <i>his</i> feet <i>is as</i> a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease. “He who is at ease holds disaster in contempt, As prepared for those whose feet slip. Those who are at ease have contempt for misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are slipping.
6 The tents of robbers are safe, and those who provoke God are secure— those who carry their god in their hands. The tents of robbers are at peace, and those who provoke God are secure, who bring their god in their hand. The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth <i>abundantly</i>. “The tents of the destroyers prosper, And those who provoke God are secure, Whom God brings into their power. The tents of marauders are undisturbed, and those who provoke God are secure— those God has in his hand.
7 But ask the animals, and they will instruct you; ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you. “But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: “But just ask the animals, and have them teach you; And the birds of the sky, and have them tell you. “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;
8 Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; let the fish of the sea inform you. or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. “Or speak to the earth, and have it teach you; And have the fish of the sea tell you. or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you.
9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? “Who among all these does not know That the hand of the LORD has done this, Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
10 The life of every living thing is in His hand, as well as the breath of all mankind. In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind. In whose hand <i>is</i> the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
11 Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes its food? Does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food? Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat? “Does the ear not put words to the test, As the palate tastes its food? Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes food?
12 Wisdom is found with the elderly, and understanding comes with long life. Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. With the ancient <i>is</i> wisdom; and in length of days understanding. “Wisdom is with the aged, <i>And with</i> long life <i>comes</i> understanding. Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?
13 Wisdom and strength belong to God; counsel and understanding are His. “With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding. With him <i>is</i> wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding. “Wisdom and might are with Him; Advice and understanding <i>belong</i> to Him. “To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.
14 What He tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man He imprisons cannot be released. If he tears down, none can rebuild; if he shuts a man in, none can open. Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening. “Behold, He tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt; He imprisons a person, and there is no release. What he tears down cannot be rebuilt; those he imprisons cannot be released.
15 If He holds back the waters, they dry up, and if He releases them, they overwhelm the land. If he withholds the waters, they dry up; if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land. Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth. “Behold, He restrains the waters, and they dry up; And He sends them out, and they inundate the earth. If he holds back the waters, there is drought; if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.
16 True wisdom and power belong to Him. The deceived and the deceiver are His. With him are strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are his. With him <i>is</i> strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver <i>are</i> his. “Strength and sound wisdom are with Him. One who goes astray and one who leads astray belong to Him. To him belong strength and insight; both deceived and deceiver are his.
17 He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools of judges. He leads counselors away stripped, and judges he makes fools. He leadeth counsellers away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools. “He makes advisers walk barefoot And makes fools of judges. He leads rulers away stripped and makes fools of judges.
18 He loosens the bonds placed by kings and fastens a belt around their waists. He looses the bonds of kings and binds a waistcloth on their hips. He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle. “He undoes the binding of kings, And ties a loincloth around their waist. He takes off the shackles put on by kings and ties a loincloth around their waist.
19 He leads priests away barefoot and overthrows the established. He leads priests away stripped and overthrows the mighty. He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty. “He makes priests walk barefoot, And overthrows the secure ones. 20 He deprives the trusted of speech and takes away the discernment of elders. He deprives of speech those who are trusted and takes away the discernment of the elders. He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged. “He deprives the trusted ones of speech, And takes away the discernment of the elders. He silences the lips of trusted advisers and takes away the discernment of elders.
21 He pours out contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty. He pours contempt on princes and loosens the belt of the strong. 22 He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into light. He uncovers the deeps out of darkness and brings deep darkness to light. 24 He deprives the earth’s leaders of reason and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth and makes them wander in a trackless waste. 25 They grope in the darkness without light; He makes them stagger like drunkards. They grope in the dark without light, and he makes them stagger like a drunken man.
