1 Woe to those enacting crooked statutes and writing oppressive laws Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees,
2 to keep the poor from getting a fair trial and to deprive the needy among my people of justice, so that widows can be their spoil and they can plunder the fatherless. to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless.
3 What will you do on the day of punishment when devastation comes from far away? Who will you run to for help? Where will you leave your wealth? What will you do on the day of punishment, in the ruin that will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?
4 There will be nothing to do except crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. In all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still raised to strike. Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. 6 I will send him against a godless nation; I will command him to go against a people destined for my rage, to take spoils, to plunder, and to trample them down like clay in the streets. Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. I send him against a godless nation, I dispatch him against a people who anger me, to seize loot and snatch plunder, and to trample them down like mud in the streets.
7 But this is not what he intends; this is not what he plans. It is his intent to destroy and to cut off many nations. But he does not so intend, and his heart does not so think; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few; But this is not what he intends, this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations.
8 For he says, “Aren’t all my commanders kings? for he says: “Are not my commanders all kings? Are not my commanders all kings?’ he says.
9 Isn’t Calno like Carchemish? Isn’t Hamath like Arpad? Isn’t Samaria like Damascus? Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? Has not Kalno fared like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad, and Samaria like Damascus?
10 As my hand seized the kingdoms of worthless images, kingdoms whose idols exceeded those of Jerusalem and Samaria, As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria, As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols, kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11 and as I did to Samaria and its worthless images will I not also do to Jerusalem and its idols? ” shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?” shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?’”
12 But when the Lord finishes all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for his arrogant acts and the proud look in his eyes.” When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes.
13 For he said: I have done this by my own strength and wisdom, for I am clever. I abolished the borders of nations and plundered their treasures; like a mighty warrior, I subjugated the inhabitants. For he says: “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones. For he says: “’By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their kings.
14 My hand has reached out, as if into a nest, to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered the whole earth. No wing fluttered; no beak opened or chirped. My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken, so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing or opened the mouth or chirped.” As one reaches into a nest, so my hand reached for the wealth of the nations; as people gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries; not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.’”
15 Does an ax exalt itself above the one who chops with it? Does a saw magnify itself above the one who saws with it? It would be like a rod waving the ones who lift it! It would be like a staff lifting the one who isn’t wood! Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood! Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it, or the saw boast against the one who uses it? As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up, or a club brandish the one who is not wood!
16 Therefore the Lord GOD of Armies will inflict an emaciating disease on the well-fed of Assyria, and he will kindle a burning fire under its glory. Therefore the Lord GOD of hosts will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors, and under his glory a burning will be kindled, like the burning of fire. Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease upon his sturdy warriors; under his pomp a fire will be kindled like a blazing flame.
17 Israel’s Light will become a fire, and its Holy One, a flame. In one day it will burn and consume Assyria’s thorns and thistles. The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One a flame, and it will burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day. The Light of Israel will become a fire, their Holy One a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns and his briers.
18 He will completely destroy the glory of its forests and orchards as a sickness consumes a person. The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the LORD will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away. The splendor of his forests and fertile fields it will completely destroy, as when a sick person wastes away.
19 The remaining trees of its forest will be so few in number that a child could count them. The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down. And the remaining trees of his forests will be so few that a child could write them down.
20 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no longer depend on the one who struck them, but they will faithfully depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. In that day the remnant of Israel, the survivors of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who struck them down but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
21 The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the Mighty God. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.
22 Israel, even if your people were as numerous as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction has been decreed; justice overflows. For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. Though your people be like the sand by the sea, Israel, only a remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous.
23 For throughout the land the Lord GOD of Armies is carrying out a destruction that was decreed. For the Lord GOD of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth. The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed upon the whole land.
24 Therefore, the Lord GOD of Armies says this: “My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear Assyria, though they strike you with a rod and raise their staff over you as the Egyptians did. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: “O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did. Therefore this is what the Lord, the LORD Almighty, says: “My people who live in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrians, who beat you with a rod and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25 In just a little while my wrath will be spent and my anger will turn to their destruction.” For in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. Very soon my anger against you will end and my wrath will be directed to their destruction.”
26 And the LORD of Armies will brandish a whip against him as he did when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb; and he will raise his staff over the sea as he did in Egypt. And the LORD of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. The LORD Almighty will lash them with a whip, as when he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb; and he will raise his staff over the waters, as he did in Egypt.
27 On that day his burden will fall from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck. The yoke will be broken because your neck will be too large. And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.” In that day their burden will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat.
28 Assyria has come to Aiath and has gone through Migron, storing their equipment at Michmash. He has come to Aiath; he has passed through Migron; at Michmash he stores his baggage; They enter Aiath; they pass through Migron; they store supplies at Mikmash.
29 They crossed over at the ford, saying, “We will spend the night at Geba.” The people of Ramah are trembling; those at Gibeah of Saul have fled. they have crossed over the pass; at Geba they lodge for the night; Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul has fled. They go over the pass, and say, “We will camp overnight at Geba.” Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul flees.
30 Cry aloud, daughter of Gallim! Listen, Laishah! Anathoth is miserable. Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim! Give attention, O Laishah! O poor Anathoth! Cry out, Daughter Gallim! Listen, Laishah! Poor Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled. The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge. Madmenah is in flight; the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. Madmenah is in flight; the people of Gebim take cover.
32 Today the Assyrians will stand at Nob, shaking their fists at the mountain of Daughter Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. This very day he will halt at Nob; he will shake his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. This day they will halt at Nob; they will shake their fist at the mount of Daughter Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem.
33 Look, the Lord GOD of Armies will chop off the branches with terrifying power, and the tall trees will be cut down, the high trees felled. Behold, the Lord GOD of hosts will lop the boughs with terrifying power; the great in height will be hewn down, and the lofty will be brought low. See, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will lop off the boughs with great power. The lofty trees will be felled, the tall ones will be brought low.
34 He is clearing the thickets of the forest with an ax, and Lebanon with its majesty will fall. He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe, and Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One. He will cut down the forest thickets with an ax; Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.
