1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord delivered into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, along with some of the articles from the house of God. He carried these off to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, where he put them in the treasury of his god. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. And the Lord handed Jehoiakim king of Judah over to him, along with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god. And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his god.
3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, the chief of his court officials, to bring in some Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring <i>certain</i> of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; Then the king told Ashpenaz, the chief of his officials, to bring in some of the sons of Israel, including some of the royal family and of the nobles, Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility—
4 young men without blemish, handsome, gifted in all wisdom, knowledgeable, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace— and to teach them the language and literature of the Chaldeans. youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. Children in whom <i>was</i> no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as <i>had</i> ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. youths in whom there was no impairment, who were good-looking, suitable for instruction in every <i>kind of</i> expertise, endowed with understanding and discerning knowledge, and who had ability to serve in the king’s court; and <i>he ordered Ashpenaz</i> to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.
5 The king assigned them daily provisions of the royal food and wine. They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king’s service. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. The king also allotted for them a daily ration from the king’s choice food and from the wine which he drank, and <i>ordered</i> that they be educated for three years, at the end of which they were to enter the king’s personal service. The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.
6 Among these young men were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: Now among them from the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
7 The chief official gave them new names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego. Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel <i>the name</i> of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego. Then the commander of the officials assigned <i>new</i> names to them; and to Daniel he assigned <i>the name</i> Belteshazzar, to Hananiah Shadrach, to Mishael Meshach, and to Azariah Abed-nego. The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
8 But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or wine. So he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought <i>permission</i> from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself. But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.
9 Now God had granted Daniel favor and compassion from the chief official, And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials. Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel,
10 but he said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking thinner than those of the other young men your age? You would endanger my head before the king!” and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king.” And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which <i>are</i> of your sort? then shall ye make <i>me</i> endanger my head to the king. The commander of the officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has allotted your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking gaunt in comparison to the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.” but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”
11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
12 “Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink. “Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. “Please put your servants to the test for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink. “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13 Then compare our appearances with those of the young men who are eating the royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king’s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. Then let our appearance be examined in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.” Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”
14 So he consented to this and tested them for ten days. So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. 15 And at the end of ten days, they looked healthier and better nourished than all the young men who were eating the king’s food. At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat. And at the end of ten days their appearance seemed better, and they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king’s choice food. At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.
16 So the steward continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and he gave them vegetables instead. So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables. Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse. So the overseer continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and kept giving them vegetables. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.
17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. And Daniel had insight into all kinds of visions and dreams. As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. And as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in every <i>kind of</i> literature and expertise; Daniel even understood all <i>kinds of</i> visions and dreams. To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.
18 Now at the end of the time specified by the king, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. Then at the end of the days which the king had specified for presenting them, the commander of the officials presented them before Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
19 And the king spoke with them, and among all the young men he found no one equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the king’s service. And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king. And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. And the king talked with them, and out of them all not one was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; so they entered the king’s personal service. The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.
20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom. And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom. And in all matters of wisdom <i>and</i> understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians <i>and</i> astrologers that <i>were</i> in all his realm. As for every matter of expertise and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the soothsayer priests <i>and</i> conjurers who <i>were</i> in all his realm. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.
21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus. And Daniel was there until the first year of King Cyrus. And Daniel continued <i>even</i> unto the first year of king Cyrus. And Daniel continued until the first year of Cyrus the king. And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.
