1 And there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim. And his name was Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
2 And to him were two wives: The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the second Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, and Hannah had no children. He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 And that man went up from his city from days to days to bow and sacrifice to YHWH of Hosts in Shiloh. And were there the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of YHWH. Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD. Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD.
4 And whenever came the time for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters portions. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
5 And to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although YHWH had closed her womb. But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb.
6 And her rival also provoked her severely to make her miserable, because YHWH had shut up her womb. And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.
7 And it was year by year, when she went up to the house of YHWH, that she provoked her. And she wept and did not eat. So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.
8 And Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?” And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”
9 And Hannah arose after they had finished eating in Shiloh, and after drinking, and Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of YHWH. After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the LORD’s house.
10 And she was bitter of soul, and she prayed to YHWH and wept bitterly. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.
11 And she made a vow and said, “O YHWH of Hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant, and remember me and not forget Your maidservant, and will give to your maidservant a male seed, I will give him to YHWH all the days of his life, and a razor shall not go up on his head.” And she vowed a vow and said, “O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.” And she made a vow, saying, “LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the face of YHWH, that Eli watched her mouth. As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.
13 And Hannah, she spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. And Eli thought she was drunk. Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk
14 And Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from you.” And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”
15 And Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman oppressed in spirit; and I have not drunk any wine or strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the face of YHWH. But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD.
16 Do not put your maidservant before the face of a daughter of worthlessness, for out of the abundance of my anguish and grief I have been speaking until now.” Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”
17 And Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of Him.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.” Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”
18 And she said, “Let your maidservant find favor in your eyes.” And the woman went her way, and ate, and her face was not sad for herself anymore. And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.
19 And they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the face of YHWH, and they returned and came to their house in Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and YHWH remembered her. They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.
20 And it came to pass, in the coming around of the days, that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, “For from YHWH I have asked for him.” And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the LORD.” So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the LORD for him.”
21 And the man Elkanah went up, and all his house, to offer to YHWH the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,
22 And Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Until the child is weaned, then I will bring him, that he may appear before YHWH and remain there even to forever.” But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the LORD and dwell there forever.” Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always.”
23 And Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what is good in your eyes. Wait until you have weaned him. Only let YHWH establish His word.” And the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the LORD establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
24 And she took him up with her when she had weaned him, along with a three-year-old bull and one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of YHWH in Shiloh; and the boy was a young boy. And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. And the child was young. After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.
25 And they slaughtered a bull and brought the boy to Eli. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli,
26 And she said, “Please, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you in this place praying to YHWH. And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the LORD. and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
27 I prayed for this boy, and YHWH has granted to me my petition that I asked of Him. For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition that I made to him. I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.
28 And also I have granted him to YHWH. As long as the days that he lives he shall be granted to YHWH.” And they bowed low there before YHWH. Therefore I have lent him to the LORD. As long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD.” And he worshiped the LORD there. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD.” And he worshiped the LORD there.
