1 And Boaz went up to the gate, and he sat there, and behold, the kinsman-redeemer was passing by, of whom Boaz had spoken. And he said, “Turn aside, sit here such a one, such a one.” And he turned aside and sat. Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer he had mentioned came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.
2 And he took ten men from the elders of the city and he said, “Sit here.” And they sat. And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down. Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, “Sit here,” and they did so.
3 And he said to the kinsman-redeemer, “The piece of the field that belongs to our brother, to Elimelech, Naomi, the woman returning from the fields of Moab, is selling, Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek.
4 and I said, ‘I will uncover your ear,' saying, ‘Buy it before those sitting here and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you will not redeem it, tell me, that I may know; for there is none besides you to redeem it, and I am after you." And he said, “I will redeem it.” So I thought I would tell you of it and say, ‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.” I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line.” “I will redeem it,” he said.
5 And Boaz said, “In the day of your buying the field from the hand of Naomi, and from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, you must buy it to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance.” Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.” Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.”
6 And the kinsman-redeemer said, “I am not able to redeem it for myself, lest I damage my own inheritance. Redeem it for yourself. You have my redemption, for I am not able to redeem it.” Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.” At this, the guardian-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.”
7 And this was formerly in Israel concerning the redemption and concerning the exchange: To confirm every matter, a man would remove his sandal and give it to his companion, and this was the testimony in Israel. Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. (Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel.)
8 And the kinsman-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal. So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal.
9 And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You⁺ are witnesses this day that I have bought all that belonged to Elimelech, and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon, from the hand of Naomi. Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and to Mahlon. Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon.
10 And also Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired for myself for a wife, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance, and the name of the dead will not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his place; you⁺ are witnesses this day.” Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!”
11 And all the people who were at the gate, and the elders, said, “Witnesses! May YHWH make the woman, the one coming to your house, like Rachel and like Leah, the two who built the house of Israel; and you do virtuously in Ephrathah, and proclaim the name in Bethlehem. Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem, Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.
12 And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, from the seed that YHWH gives to you from this young woman.” and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the LORD will give you by this young woman.” Through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.”
13 And Boaz took Ruth, and she became to him for a wife, and he went in to her, and YHWH gave to her conception, and she bore a son. So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son. So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.
14 And the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be YHWH, who has not let cease a kinsman-redeemer to you this day, and may his name be proclaimed in Israel. Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel!
15 And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age. For your daughter-in-law who loves you—who is better to you than seven sons—has borne him.” He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
16 And Naomi took the child and laid him in her bosom, and she became to him a nurse. Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him.
17 And the neighbor women called for him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David. And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18 And these are the generations of Perez: Perez begat Hezron, Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron,
19 and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab,
20 and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,
21 and Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed,
22 and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David. Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David. Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.
