Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. | Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. | Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. |
Now I praise you that ye remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. | Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. | I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. |
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. | But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. | But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. |
Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. | Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, | Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. |
But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoureth her head: for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven. | but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. | But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. |
For if a woman is not veiled, let her also be shorn: but if it is a shame to a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be veiled. | For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. | For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. |
For a man indeed ought not to have his head veiled, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. | For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. | A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. |
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man: | For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. | For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; |
for neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man: | Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. | neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. |
for this cause ought the woman to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels. | That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. | It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. |
Howbeit neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord. | Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; | Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. |
For as the woman is of the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God. | for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. | For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. |
Judge ye in yourselves: is it seemly that a woman pray unto God unveiled? | Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? | Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? |
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a dishonour to him? | Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, | Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, |
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. | but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. | but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. |
But if any man seemeth to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. | If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God. | If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. |
But in giving you this charge, I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better but for the worse. | But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. | In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. |
For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and I partly believe it. | For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part, | In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. |
For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. | for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. | No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. |
When therefore ye assemble yourselves together, it is not possible to eat the Lord's supper: | When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. | So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, |
for in your eating each one taketh before other his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken. | For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. | for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. |
What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. | What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. | Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! |
For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, how that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread; | For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, | For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, |
and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me. | and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” | and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” |
In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. | In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” | In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” |
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord's death till he come. | For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. | For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. |
Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. | Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. | So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. |
But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup. | Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. | Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. |
For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body. | For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. | For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. |
For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep. | That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. | That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. |
But if we discerned ourselves, we should not be judged. | But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. | But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. |
But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. | But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. | Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. |
Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, wait one for another. | So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another— | So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. |
If any man is hungry, let him eat at home; that your coming together be not unto judgment. And the rest will I set in order whensoever I come. | if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home—so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come. | Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions. |
