When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus,1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus,
he said to his advisers, “This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead! That is why he can do such miracles.”2and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him."
For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias (the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip).3For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s law for you to marry her.”4because John had repeatedly told him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.5Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet.
But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him,6But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,
so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted.7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
At her mother’s urging, the girl said, “I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!”8Instructed by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."
Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders.9Although it grieved the king, because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.
So John was beheaded in the prison,10So he sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
and his head was brought on a tray and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
Later, John’s disciples came for his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus what had happened. Jesus Feeds Five Thousand12Then John's disciples came and took the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.
As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns.13Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place. But when the crowd heard about it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.14As he got out he saw the large crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
That evening the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.”15When evening arrived, his disciples came to him saying, "This is an isolated place and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.”16But he replied, "They don't need to go. You give them something to eat."
“But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.17They said to him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish."
“Bring them here,” he said.18"Bring them here to me," he replied.
Then he told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.19Then he instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers.20They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, twelve baskets full.
About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children! Jesus Walks on Water21Not counting women and children, there were about five thousand men who ate.
Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home.22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dispersed the crowds.
After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.23And after he sent the crowds away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.
Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves.24Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.
About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.25As the night was ending, Jesus came to them walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”26When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said, "It's a ghost!" and cried out with fear.
But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here! ”27But immediately Jesus spoke to them: "Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid."
Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”28Peter said to him, "Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water."
“Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus.29So he said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.30But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped.32When they went up into the boat, the wind ceased.
Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret.34After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed.35When the people there recognized him, they sent word into all the surrounding area, and they brought all their sick to him.
They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.36They begged him if they could only touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
