So the LORD sent Nathan the prophet to tell David this story: “There were two men in a certain town. One was rich, and one was poor. | 1so the LORD sent Nathan to David. Nathan approached David and said, "There are two men in the city. One is rich and one is poor. |
The rich man owned a great many sheep and cattle. | 2The rich man has many flocks and herds, |
The poor man owned nothing but one little lamb he had bought. He raised that little lamb, and it grew up with his children. It ate from the man’s own plate and drank from his cup. He cuddled it in his arms like a baby daughter. | 3but the poor man had nothing except for one little ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It used to share his food and drink from his own cup. It even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. |
One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing an animal from his own flock or herd, he took the poor man’s lamb and killed it and prepared it for his guest.” | 4A traveler arrived to visit the rich man. Because he was unwilling to take an animal from one of his own flocks or herds to prepare for the guest who had come to visit him, he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to visit him." |
David was furious. “As surely as the LORD lives,” he vowed, “any man who would do such a thing deserves to die! | 5David flew into a rage at the man and told Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! |
He must repay four lambs to the poor man for the one he stole and for having no pity.” | 6He will restore the lamb four times its value, because he did this thing, and because he did it without compassion." |
Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man! The LORD, the God of Israel, says: I anointed you king of Israel and saved you from the power of Saul. | 7But Nathan replied to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD God of Israel says: "'I anointed you king—and you became king over Israel. "'I delivered you from Saul's control. |
I gave you your master’s house and his wives and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. And if that had not been enough, I would have given you much, much more. | 8"'I gave you your former master's household. "'I placed your former master's wives right in your arms. "'I gave you Israel and Judah. "'And if this had been too little, I would have added much more than that to you! |
Why, then, have you despised the word of the LORD and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah the Hittite with the sword of the Ammonites and stolen his wife. | 9"'Why did you despise what the LORD has promised by doing what is detestable in his sight? "'You struck down Uriah the Hittite with a battle sword. "'You took his wife to be your own. "'You killed him with the sword of the Ammonite army. |
From this time on, your family will live by the sword because you have despised me by taking Uriah’s wife to be your own. | 10"'Therefore the sword will never leave your household, because you have despised me by taking the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.' |
“This is what the LORD says: Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your wives to another man before your very eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view. | 11"This is what the LORD says: "'Listen very carefully! "'I'm raising up evil against you right out of your own household. "'I'm going to take your wives away from you right before your eyes. "'Then I'll give them to your neighbor. "'And then he's going to have sex with your wives in broad daylight! |
You did it secretly, but I will make this happen to you openly in the sight of all Israel.” David Confesses His Guilt | 12"'What you did in secret I'm going to do right in front of all Israel and in broad daylight as well!'" |
Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “Yes, but the LORD has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin. | 13At this point, David told Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan responded to David, "There's one other thing: the LORD has forgiven your sin. You won't die. |
Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the word of the LORD by doing this, your child will die.” | 14Nevertheless, because you have despised the LORD's enemies with utter contempt, the son born to you will most certainly die." |
After Nathan returned to his home, the LORD sent a deadly illness to the child of David and Uriah’s wife. | 15Then Nathan went home. After this, the LORD afflicted the child that Uriah's wife had born to David, and the child became very ill. |
David begged God to spare the child. He went without food and lay all night on the bare ground. | 16David begged God on behalf of the youngster. He fasted, went inside, and spent the night lying on the ground. |
The elders of his household pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused. | 17His closest advisors at the palace got up, remained with him, and tried to help him get up from the ground, but he would not do so. He also wouldn't eat with them. |
Then on the seventh day the child died. David’s advisers were afraid to tell him. “He wouldn’t listen to reason while the child was ill,” they said. “What drastic thing will he do when we tell him the child is dead?” | 18A week later, the child died, and David's staff was afraid to tell him that the child had died. They were telling themselves, "Look, when the child was still alive, we talked to him but he wouldn't listen to what we said. Now what kind of trouble will he bring on himself if we tell him that the child has died?" |
When David saw them whispering, he realized what had happened. “Is the child dead?” he asked. “Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.” | 19But as David observed his staff whispering together, he perceived that the child had died, so he asked his staff, "Is the child dead?" They replied, "He has died." |
Then David got up from the ground, washed himself, put on lotions, and changed his clothes. He went to the Tabernacle and worshiped the LORD. After that, he returned to the palace and was served food and ate. | 20At this, David got up from the ground, washed, anointed himself, changed his clothes, and went into the LORD's tent to worship. Then he went back to his palace where, at his request, they served him food and he ate. |
His advisers were amazed. “We don’t understand you,” they told him. “While the child was still living, you wept and refused to eat. But now that the child is dead, you have stopped your mourning and are eating again.” | 21His staff asked him, "What's this about? When the child was alive, you fasted and cried. Now that the child has died, you get up and eat!" |
David replied, “I fasted and wept while the child was alive, for I said, ‘Perhaps the LORD will be gracious to me and let the child live.’ | 22He answered, "When the child was alive, I fasted and cried. I asked myself, 'Who knows? Maybe the LORD will show grace to me and the child will live.' |
But why should I fast when he is dead? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him one day, but he cannot return to me.” | 23But now that he has died, what's the point of fasting? Can I bring him back again? I'll be going to be with him, but he won't be returning to me." |
Then David comforted Bathsheba, his wife, and slept with her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. The LORD loved the child | 24Then David consoled his wife Bathsheba. He went in and had sex with her, and she bore a son whom he named Solomon. The LORD loved him, |
and sent word through Nathan the prophet that they should name him Jedidiah (which means “beloved of the LORD”), as the LORD had commanded. David Captures Rabbah | 25and sent a message written by Nathan the prophet to call his name Jedidiah, for the Lord's sake. |
Meanwhile, Joab was fighting against Rabbah, the capital of Ammon, and he captured the royal fortifications. | 26Meanwhile, Joab attacked the Ammonite city of Rabbah and captured its stronghold. |
Joab sent messengers to tell David, “I have fought against Rabbah and captured its water supply. | 27Then Joab sent messengers to David to tell him, "I just attacked Rabbah and captured its municipal water supply, |
Now bring the rest of the army and capture the city. Otherwise, I will capture it and get credit for the victory.” | 28so call out the rest of the army, attack the city, and capture it. Otherwise, I'll take the city myself and name it after me." |
So David gathered the rest of the army and went to Rabbah, and he fought against it and captured it. | 29So David mustered his entire army and marched on Rabbah, attacked it, and captured it. |
David removed the crown from the king’s head, and it was placed on his own head. The crown was made of gold and set with gems, and it weighed seventy-five pounds. David took a vast amount of plunder from the city. | 30He confiscated the crown of their king from his head—it weighed one talent in gold and was set with precious stones—and it was placed on David's head. He confiscated a great amount of war booty that had been plundered from the city, |
He also made slaves of the people of Rabbah and forced them to labor with saws, iron picks, and iron axes, and to work in the brick kilns. That is how he dealt with the people of all the Ammonite towns. Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem. | 31brought back the people who had lived in it, placing them under conscripted labor with saws, iron picks, and axes. He did this to every Ammonite city, and then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem. |
