One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. | 1The Pharisees and Sadducees approached, and as a test, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. |
He replied, “You know the saying, ‘Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow; | 2He answered them: "When evening comes you say, It will be good weather because the sky is red.' |
red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times! | 3And in the morning, Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can't read the signs of the times. |
Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. ” Then Jesus left them and went away. Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees | 4An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then He left them and went away. |
Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread. | 5The disciples reached the other shore, and they had forgotten to take bread. |
“Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” | 6Then Jesus told them, "Watch out and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." |
At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. | 7And they discussed among themselves, "We didn't bring any bread." |
Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread? | 8Aware of this, Jesus said, "You of little faith! Why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread? |
Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up? | 9Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the 5,000 and how many baskets you collected? |
Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up? | 10Or the seven loaves for the 4,000 and how many large baskets you collected? |
Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’” | 11Why is it you don't understand that when I told you, Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees,' it wasn't about bread?" |
Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Peter’s Declaration about Jesus | 12Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the yeast in bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. |
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” | 13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" |
“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” | 14And they said, "Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." |
Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” | 15"But you," He asked them, "who do you say that I am?" |
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” | 16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!" |
Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. | 17And Jesus responded, "Simon son of Jonah, you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father in heaven. |
Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. | 18And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the forces of Hades will not overpower it. |
And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” | 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth is already bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is already loosed in heaven." |
Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Jesus Predicts His Death | 20And He gave the disciples orders to tell no one that He was the Messiah. |
From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead. | 21From then on Jesus began to point out to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day. |
But Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. “Heaven forbid, Lord,” he said. “This will never happen to you!” | 22Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, "Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to You!" |
Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” | 23But He turned and told Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me because you're not thinking about God's concerns, but man's." |
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. | 24Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. |
If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. | 25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will find it. |
And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? | 26What will it benefit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life? |
For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds. | 27For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will reward each according to what he has done. |
And I tell you the truth, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.” | 28I assure you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." |
