Genesis 9
NLT Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
Then God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth.1And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
All the animals of the earth, all the birds of the sky, all the small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the fish in the sea will look on you with fear and terror. I have placed them in your power.2The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered.
I have given them to you for food, just as I have given you grain and vegetables.3Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.
But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it.4But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
“And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die.5And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.
If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image.6“Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.
Now be fruitful and multiply, and repopulate the earth.”7And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”
Then God told Noah and his sons,8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him,
“I hereby confirm my covenant with you and your descendants,9“Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you,
and with all the animals that were on the boat with you—the birds, the livestock, and all the wild animals—every living creature on earth.10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth.
Yes, I am confirming my covenant with you. Never again will floodwaters kill all living creatures; never again will a flood destroy the earth.”11I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come.12And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations:
I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth.13I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds,14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds,
and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life.15I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.”16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
Then God said to Noah, “Yes, this rainbow is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth.” Noah’s Sons17God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
The sons of Noah who came out of the boat with their father were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham is the father of Canaan.)18The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)
From these three sons of Noah came all the people who now populate the earth.19These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed.
After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard.20Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard.
One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent.21He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent.
Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers.22And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside.
Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked.23Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done.24When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him,
Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham: “May Canaan be cursed! May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives.”25he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
Then Noah said, “May the LORD, the God of Shem, be blessed, and may Canaan be his servant!26He also said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant.
May God expand the territory of Japheth! May Japheth share the prosperity of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant.”27May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.”
Noah lived another 350 years after the great flood.28After the flood Noah lived 350 years.
He lived 950 years, and then he died.29All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.
