At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”2and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.3Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”4for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her."
And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.5Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.
But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.6On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much
Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.7that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”8Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.9The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted
So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.10and had John beheaded in the prison.
And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.12John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.13When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.14When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”15As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."
But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”16Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”17"We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.
He said, “Bring them here to Me.”18"Bring them here to me," he said.
Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.19And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.20They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.21The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,
But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.24and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.25Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”27But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”28"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.29"Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.34When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick,35And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.36and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
