Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:1Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,2Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,3His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.7and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.9But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;10Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,
for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.12So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.
Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you,13I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body,
knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me.14because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.15And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.16For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”17He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.18We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;19We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things.
for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.21For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
