New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: | 1Simeon Peter, a slave and an apostle of Jesus Christ: To those who have obtained a faith of equal privilege with ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ. |
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, | 2May grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. |
as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, | 3His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. |
by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. | 4By these He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires. |
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, | 5For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, |
to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, | 6knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, |
to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. | 7godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. |
For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. | 9The person who lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten the cleansing from his past sins. |
Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; | 10Therefore, brothers, make every effort to confirm your calling and election, because if you do these things you will never stumble. |
for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. | 11For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to you. |
For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth. | 12Therefore I will always remind you about these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you have. |
Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, | 13I consider it right, as long as I am in this bodily tent, to wake you up with a reminder, |
knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. | 14knowing that I will soon lay aside my tent, as our Lord Jesus Christ has also shown me. |
Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease. | 15And I will also make every effort that you may be able to recall these things at any time after my departure. |
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. | 16For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; instead, we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. |
For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” | 17For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, a voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory: This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him! |
And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. | 18And we heard this voice when it came from heaven while we were with Him on the holy mountain. |
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; | 19So we have the prophetic word strongly confirmed. You will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dismal place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. |
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, | 20First of all, you should know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from one's own interpretation, |
for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. | 21because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. |
