To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old: | 1To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. |
You drove out the nations with Your hand, But them You planted; You afflicted the peoples, and cast them out. | 2How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out. |
For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them. | 3For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. |
You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob. | 4Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob. |
Through You we will push down our enemies; Through Your name we will trample those who rise up against us. | 5Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. |
For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me. | 6For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. |
But You have saved us from our enemies, And have put to shame those who hated us. | 7But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. |
In God we boast all day long, And praise Your name forever. Selah | 8In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah. |
But You have cast us off and put us to shame, And You do not go out with our armies. | 9But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies. |
You make us turn back from the enemy, And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves. | 10Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. |
You have given us up like sheep intended for food, And have scattered us among the nations. | 11Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen. |
You sell Your people for next to nothing, And are not enriched by selling them. | 12Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price. |
You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scorn and a derision to those all around us. | 13Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. |
You make us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples. | 14Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. |
My dishonor is continually before me, And the shame of my face has covered me, | 15My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, |
Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the enemy and the avenger. | 16For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger. |
All this has come upon us; But we have not forgotten You, Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant. | 17All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. |
Our heart has not turned back, Nor have our steps departed from Your way; | 18Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; |
But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death. | 19Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; |
Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. | 21Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. |
Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. | 22Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. |
Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast us off forever. | 23Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. |
Why do You hide Your face, And forget our affliction and our oppression? | 24Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? |
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground. | 25For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth. |
Arise for our help, And redeem us for Your mercies’ sake. | 26Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake. |
