New King James VersionBerean Study Bible
To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old:1For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old.
You drove out the nations with Your hand, But them You planted; You afflicted the peoples, and cast them out.2With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out.
For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them.3For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them.
You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob.4You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob.
Through You we will push down our enemies; Through Your name we will trample those who rise up against us.5Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies.
For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me.6For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me.
But You have saved us from our enemies, And have put to shame those who hated us.7For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame.
In God we boast all day long, And praise Your name forever. Selah8In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah
But You have cast us off and put us to shame, And You do not go out with our armies.9But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies.
You make us turn back from the enemy, And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.10You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us.
You have given us up like sheep intended for food, And have scattered us among the nations.11You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations.
You sell Your people for next to nothing, And are not enriched by selling them.12You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale.
You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scorn and a derision to those all around us.13You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.
You make us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples.14You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples.
My dishonor is continually before me, And the shame of my face has covered me,15All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face,
Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the enemy and the avenger.16at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge.
All this has come upon us; But we have not forgotten You, Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant.17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant.
Our heart has not turned back, Nor have our steps departed from Your way;18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path.
But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death.19But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched out our hands to a foreign god,20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.21would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart?
Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.22Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast us off forever.23Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever.
Why do You hide Your face, And forget our affliction and our oppression?24Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground.25For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth.
Arise for our help, And redeem us for Your mercies’ sake.26Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion.
