| 1And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. | 1A man of the family of Levi married the daughter of a descendant of Levi. |
| 2So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. | 2Later, the woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was a beautiful child, and hid him for three months. |
| 3But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. | 3But when she was no longer able to hide him, she took a papyrus container, coated it with asphalt and pitch, placed the child in it, and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. |
| 4And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him. | 4Then his sister positioned herself some distance away in order to find out what would happen to him. |
| 5Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. | 5Then Pharaoh's daughter came down to the Nile River to bathe while her maids walked along the river bank. She saw the container among the reeds and sent a servant girl to get it. |
| 6And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” | 6When she opened it and saw the child, the little boy suddenly began crying. Filled with compassion for him, she exclaimed, "This is one of the Hebrew children!" |
| 7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?” | 7Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call one of the nursing Hebrew women so she can nurse the child for you?" |
| 8And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the maiden went and called the child’s mother. | 8Pharaoh's daughter told her, "Go," so the young girl went and called the child's mother. |
| 9Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. | 9Pharaoh's daughter instructed her, "Take this child and nurse him for me, and I'll pay you a salary." So the woman took the child and nursed him. |
| 10And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. So she called his name Moses, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.” | 10After the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, because she said, "I drew him out of the water." |
| 11Now it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. | 11Years later, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people, and took notice of their heavy burdens. He saw an Egyptian beating up a Hebrew, one of his own people. |
| 12So he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. | 12Looking around and seeing no one else, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. |
| 13And when he went out the second day, behold, two Hebrew men were fighting, and he said to the one who did the wrong, “Why are you striking your companion?” | 13Going out the next day, Moses noticed two Hebrew men fighting right in front of him. He told the one who was at fault, "Why did you strike your companion?" |
| 14Then he said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” So Moses feared and said, “Surely this thing is known!” | 14The man replied, "Who appointed you to be an official judge over us? Are you planning to kill me like you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses became terrified and told himself, "Certainly this event has become known!" |
| 15When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. | 15When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he tried to kill Moses. So Moses fled from Pharaoh, settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well. |
| 16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. And they came and drew water, and they filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. | 16Meanwhile, the seven daughters of a certain Midianite priest would come to draw water in order to fill water troughs for their father's sheep. |
| 17Then the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. | 17Some shepherds came to drive them away, but Moses got up, came to their rescue, and watered their sheep. |
| 18When they came to Reuel their father, he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?” | 18When they returned to their father Reuel, he asked, "Why have you returned so quickly today?" |
| 19And they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also drew enough water for us and watered the flock.” | 19"An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds," they replied, "and he even drew water for us and watered the sheep!" |
| 20So he said to his daughters, “And where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” | 20"Then where is he?" He asked his daughters. "Why did you leave the man behind? Go invite him to have something to eat." |
| 21Then Moses was content to live with the man, and he gave Zipporah his daughter to Moses. | 21Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. |
| 22And she bore him a son. He called his name Gershom, for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land.” | 22Later she gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, because he used to say, "I became an alien in a foreign land." |
| 23Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage. | 23The king of Egypt eventually died, and the Israelis groaned because of the bondage. They cried out, and their cry for deliverance from slavery ascended to God. |
| 24So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. | 24God heard their groaning and remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. |
| 25And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God acknowledged them. | 25God watched the Israelis and took notice of them. |
