| 1Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. | 1There was a man from Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. His name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. |
| 2And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. | 2He had two wives, the first named Hannah and the second Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless. |
| 3This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there. | 3This man would go up from his town every year to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were the LORD's priests. |
| 4And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. | 4Whenever Elkanah offered a sacrifice, he always gave portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to each of her sons and daughters. |
| 5But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the LORD had closed her womb. | 5But he gave a double portion to Hannah, for he loved her even though the LORD had kept her from conceiving. |
| 6And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the LORD had closed her womb. | 6Her rival would taunt her severely just to provoke her, because the LORD had kept Hannah from conceiving. |
| 7So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat. | 7Whenever she went up to the LORD's house, her rival taunted her in this way every year. Hannah wept and would not eat. |
| 8Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?” | 8"Hannah, why are you crying?" her husband Elkanah asked. "Why won't you eat? Why are you troubled? Am I not better to you than 10 sons?" |
| 9So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the LORD. | 9Hannah got up after they ate and drank at Shiloh. Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the LORD's tabernacle. |
| 10And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish. | 10Deeply hurt, Hannah prayed to the LORD and wept with many tears. |
| 11Then she made a vow and said, “O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.” | 11Making a vow, she pleaded, " LORD of Hosts, if You will take notice of Your servant's affliction, remember and not forget me, and give Your servant a son, I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut." |
| 12And it happened, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth. | 12While she continued praying in the LORD's presence, Eli watched her lips. |
| 13Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. | 13Hannah was praying silently, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. Eli thought she was drunk |
| 14So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!” | 14and scolded her, "How long are you going to be drunk? Get rid of your wine!" |
| 15But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. | 15"No, my lord," Hannah replied. "I am a woman with a broken heart. I haven't had any wine or beer; I've been pouring out my heart before the LORD. |
| 16Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.” | 16Don't think of me as a wicked woman; I've been praying from the depth of my anguish and resentment." |
| 17Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.” | 17Eli responded, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant the petition you've requested from Him." |
| 18And she said, “Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. | 18"May your servant find favor with you," she replied. Then Hannah went on her way; she ate and no longer looked despondent. |
| 19Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. | 19The next morning Elkanah and Hannah got up early to bow in worship before the LORD. Afterward, they returned home to Ramah. Then Elkanah was intimate with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. |
| 20So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.” | 20After some time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, because she said, "I requested him from the LORD." |
| 21Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow. | 21When Elkanah and all his household went up to make the annual sacrifice and his vow offering to the LORD, |
| 22But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever.” | 22Hannah did not go and explained to her husband, "After the child is weaned, I'll take him to appear in the LORD's presence and to stay there permanently." |
| 23So Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the LORD establish His word.” Then the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. | 23Her husband Elkanah replied, "Do what you think is best, and stay here until you've weaned him. May the LORD confirm your word." So Hannah stayed there and nursed her son until she weaned him. |
| 24Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh. And the child was young. | 24When she had weaned him, she took him with her to Shiloh, as well as a three-year-old bull, half a bushel of flour, and a jar of wine. Though the boy was still young, she took him to the LORD's house at Shiloh. |
| 25Then they slaughtered a bull, and brought the child to Eli. | 25Then they slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli. |
| 26And she said, “O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD. | 26"Please, my lord," she said, "as sure as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD. |
| 27For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. | 27I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD gave me what I asked Him for, |
| 28Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there. | 28I now give the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is given to the LORD." Then he bowed in worship to the LORD there. |
