Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock,1The Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. When they surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, they saw that the region was a good one for livestock.
the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,2So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the leaders of the community and said:
“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Shebam, Nebo, and Beon,3"The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
the country which the LORD defeated before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”4which the LORD struck down before the community of Israel, is good land for livestock, and your servants own livestock."
Therefore they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not take us over the Jordan.”5They said, "If we have found favor with you, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Don't make us cross the Jordan."
And Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben: “Shall your brethren go to war while you sit here?6But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, "Should your brothers go to war while you stay here?
Now why will you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them?7Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land the LORD has given them?
Thus your fathers did when I sent them away from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.8That's what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.
For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, so that they did not go into the land which the LORD had given them.9After they went up as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them.
So the LORD’s anger was aroused on that day, and He swore an oath, saying,10So the LORD's anger burned that day, and he swore an oath:
‘Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not wholly followed Me,11'Because they did not remain loyal to me, none of the men twenty years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--
except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.’12none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they did remain loyal to the LORD.'
So the LORD’s anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone.13The LORD's anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the LORD's sight was gone.
And look! You have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel.14And here you, a brood of sinners, stand in your fathers' place adding even more to the LORD's burning anger against Israel.
For if you turn away from following Him, He will once again leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people.”15If you turn back from following him, he will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will destroy all of them."
Then they came near to him and said: “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,16Then they approached him and said, "We want to build sheep pens here for our livestock and cities for our dependents.
but we ourselves will be armed, ready to go before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.17But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our dependents will remain in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
We will not return to our homes until every one of the children of Israel has received his inheritance.18We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has taken possession of his inheritance.
For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Jordan.”19Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance will be across the Jordan to the east."
Then Moses said to them: “If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before the LORD for the war,20Moses replied to them, "If you do this--if you arm yourselves for battle before the LORD,
and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,21and every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies from his presence,
and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you may return and be blameless before the LORD and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.22and the land is subdued before the LORD--afterward you may return and be free from obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.
But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.23But if you don't do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD; be sure your sin will catch up with you.
Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what has proceeded out of your mouth.”24Build cities for your dependents and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised."
And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying: “Your servants will do as my lord commands.25The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do just as my lord commands.
Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead;26Our dependents, wives, livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead,
but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, just as my lord says.”27but your servants are equipped for war before the LORD and will go across to the battle as my lord orders."
So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel.28So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads of the Israelite tribes.
And Moses said to them: “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession.29Moses told them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, every man in battle formation before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
But if they do not cross over armed with you, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”30But if they don't go across with you in battle formation, they must accept land in Canaan with you."
Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying: “As the LORD has said to your servants, so we will do.31The Gadites and Reubenites replied, "What the LORD has spoken to your servants is what we will do.
We will cross over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us on this side of the Jordan.”32We will cross over in battle formation before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but we will keep our hereditary possession across the Jordan."
So Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country.33So Moses gave them--the Gadites, Reubenites, and half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph--the kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites and the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, the land including its cities with the territories surrounding them.
And the children of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer,34The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
Atroth and Shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah,35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and built sheep pens.
And the children of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim,37The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
Nebo and Baal Meon (their names being changed) and Shibmah; and they gave other names to the cities which they built.38as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.
So Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it.40So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled in it.
Also Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its small towns, and called them Havoth Jair.41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages, which he renamed Jair's Villages.
Then Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah, after his own name.42Nobah went and captured Kenath with its surrounding villages and called it Nobah after his own name.
