6Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. | 6 but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep. |

8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. | 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received! |
9"Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts-- | 9 “Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins. |
10no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep. | 10 Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed. |
11Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. | 11 “Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town. |
12As you enter the home, give it your greeting. | 12 When you enter the home, give it your blessing. |
13If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. | 13 If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing. |
14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. | 14 If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave. |
15Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. | 15 I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day. |
16"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. | 16 “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. |
17Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. | 17 But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. |
18On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. | 18 You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me. |
19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, | 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. |
20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. | 20 For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. |
21"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. | 21 “A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. |
22You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. | 22 And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved. |
23When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. | 23 When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Man will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel. |
24"The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. | 24 “Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master. |
25It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household! | 25 Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names! |
26"So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. | 26 “But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. |
27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. | 27 What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear! |
28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. | 28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. |
29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. | 29 What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin ? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. |
30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. | 30 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. |
31So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. | 31 So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. |
32"Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. | 32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. |
33But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. | 33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven. |
34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. | 34 “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword. |
35For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law-- | 35 ‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. |
36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' | 36 Your enemies will be right in your own household!’ |
37"Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. | 37 “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. |
38Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. | 38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. |
39Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. | 39 If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it. |
40"Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. | 40 “Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me. |
41Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. | 41 If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs. |
42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward." | 42 And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.” |
