Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.1Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.2There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.3Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,4Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,
"Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages."5Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
"Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."8For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.9Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,10But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;
for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.11Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.12On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the king of Israel!"13Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:14And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
"Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."15Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.16These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.17The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him.18For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival.20And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus."21The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.22Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.23And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.25He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
"Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."28Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.29The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine.30Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."32And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.33This he said, signifying what death he should die.
The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?"34The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?
Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.35Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.36While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him.37But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"38That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:39Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them."40He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.41These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;42Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
for they loved human praise more than praise from God.43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Then Jesus cried out, "Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.44Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.45And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.46I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
"If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.47And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.48He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.49For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."50And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
