| 1Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said, | 1Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him, |
| 2"Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat." | 2“Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.” |
| 3He answered them, "And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition? | 3Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? |
| 4For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.' | 4 For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ |
| 5But you say, 'If someone tells his father or mother, "Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God," | 5 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ |
| 6he does not need to honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition. | 6 In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition. |
| 7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said, | 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, |
| 8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me, | 8 ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. |
| 9and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" | 9 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ ” |
| 10Then he called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. | 10Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand. |
| 11What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person." | 11 It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.” |
| 12Then the disciples came to him and said, "Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?" | 12Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?” |
| 13And he replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. | 13Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted, |
| 14Leave them! They are blind guides. If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit." | 14 so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.” |
| 15But Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us." | 15Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.” |
| 16Jesus said, "Even after all this, are you still so foolish? | 16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. |
| 17Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer? | 17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. |
| 18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person. | 18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. |
| 19For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. | 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. |
| 20These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person." | 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.” The Faith of a Gentile Woman |
| 21After going out from there, Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. | 21Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon. |
| 22A Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is horribly demon-possessed!" | 22A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.” |
| 23But he did not answer her a word. Then his disciples came and begged him, "Send her away, because she keeps on crying out after us." | 23But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.” |
| 24So he answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." | 24Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.” |
| 25But she came and bowed down before him and said, "Lord, help me!" | 25But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!” |
| 26"It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs," he said. | 26Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” |
| 27"Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." | 27She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.” |
| 28Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, your faith is great! Let what you want be done for you." And her daughter was healed from that hour. | 28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed. Jesus Heals Many People |
| 29When he left there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up a mountain, where he sat down. | 29Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down. |
| 30Then large crowds came to him bringing with them the lame, blind, crippled, mute, and many others. They laid them at his feet, and he healed them. | 30A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all. |
| 31As a result, the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel. | 31The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel. Jesus Feeds Four Thousand |
| 32Then Jesus called the disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way." | 32Then Jesus called his disciples and told them, “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.” |
| 33The disciples said to him, "Where can we get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy so great a crowd?" | 33The disciples replied, “Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?” |
| 34Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They replied, "Seven--and a few small fish." | 34Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?” They replied, “Seven loaves, and a few small fish.” |
| 35After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground, | 35So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. |
| 36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples, who then gave them to the crowds. | 36Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd. |
| 37They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. | 37They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food. |
| 38Not counting children and women, there were four thousand men who ate. | 38There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children. |
| 39After sending away the crowd, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. | 39Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan. |
