| 1The LORD spoke to Jeremiah. | 1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD. |
| 2"The LORD God of Israel says, 'Write everything that I am about to tell you in a scroll. | 2"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Write on a scroll all the words that I have spoken to you, |
| 3For I, the LORD, affirm that the time will come when I will reverse the plight of my people, Israel and Judah,' says the LORD. 'I will bring them back to the land I gave their ancestors and they will take possession of it once again.'" | 3for look, the days are coming"--this is the LORD's declaration--"when I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel and Judah," says the LORD. "I will restore them to the land I gave to their ancestors and they will possess it." |
| 4So here is what the LORD has to say about Israel and Judah. | 4These are the words the LORD spoke to Israel and Judah. |
| 5Yes, here is what he says: "You hear cries of panic and of terror; there is no peace in sight. | 5This is what the LORD says: We have heard a cry of terror, of dread--there is no peace. |
| 6Ask yourselves this and consider it carefully: Have you ever seen a man give birth to a baby? Why then do I see all these strong men grabbing their stomachs in pain like a woman giving birth? And why do their faces turn so deathly pale? | 6Ask and see whether a male can give birth. Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor and every face turned pale? |
| 7Alas, what a terrible time of trouble it is! There has never been any like it. It is a time of trouble for the descendants of Jacob, but some of them will be rescued out of it. | 7How awful that day will be! There will be no other like it! It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it. |
| 8When the time for them to be rescued comes," says the LORD who rules over all, "I will rescue you from foreign subjugation. I will deliver you from captivity. Foreigners will then no longer subjugate them. | 8On that day--this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies--I will break his yoke from your neck and tear off your chains, and strangers will never again enslave him. |
| 9But they will be subject to the LORD their God and to the Davidic ruler whom I will raise up as king over them. | 9They will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them. |
| 10So I, the LORD, tell you not to be afraid, you descendants of Jacob, my servants. Do not be terrified, people of Israel. For I will rescue you and your descendants from a faraway land where you are captives. The descendants of Jacob will return to their land and enjoy peace. They will be secure and no one will terrify them. | 10As for you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid--this is the LORD's declaration--and do not be discouraged, Israel, for without fail I will save you out of a distant place, your descendants, from the land of their captivity! Jacob will return and have calm and quiet with no one to frighten him. |
| 11For I, the LORD, affirm that I will be with you and will rescue you. I will completely destroy all the nations where I scattered you. But I will not completely destroy you. I will indeed discipline you, but only in due measure. I will not allow you to go entirely unpunished." | 11For I will be with you--this is the LORD's declaration--to save you! I will bring destruction on all the nations where I have scattered you; however, I will not bring destruction on you. I will discipline you justly, and I will by no means leave you unpunished. |
| 12Moreover, the LORD says to the people of Zion, "Your injuries are incurable; your wounds are severe. | 12For this is what the LORD says: Your injury is incurable; your wound most severe. |
| 13There is no one to plead your cause. There are no remedies for your wounds. There is no healing for you. | 13You have no defender for your case. There is no remedy for your sores, and no healing for you. |
| 14All your allies have abandoned you. They no longer have any concern for you. For I have attacked you like an enemy would. I have chastened you cruelly. For your wickedness is so great and your sin is so much. | 14All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer look for you, for I have struck you as an enemy would, with the discipline of someone cruel, because of your enormous guilt and your innumerable sins. |
| 15Why do you complain about your injuries, that your pain is incurable? I have done all this to you because your wickedness is so great and your sin is so much. | 15Why do you cry out about your injury? Your pain has no cure! I have done these things to you because of your enormous guilt and your innumerable sins. |
| 16But all who destroyed you will be destroyed. All your enemies will go into exile. Those who plundered you will be plundered. I will cause those who pillaged you to be pillaged. | 16Nevertheless, all who devoured you will be devoured, and all your adversaries--all of them--will go off into exile. Those who plunder you will be plundered, and all who raid you will be raided. |
| 17Yes, I will restore you to health. I will heal your wounds. I, the LORD, affirm it! For you have been called an outcast, Zion, whom no one cares for." | 17But I will bring you health and will heal you of your wounds--this is the LORD's declaration--for they call you Outcast, Zion whom no one cares about. |
| 18The LORD says, "I will restore the ruined houses of the descendants of Jacob. I will show compassion on their ruined homes. Every city will be rebuilt on its former ruins. Every fortified dwelling will occupy its traditional site. | 18This is what the LORD says: I will certainly restore the fortunes of Jacob's tents and show compassion on his dwellings. Every city will be rebuilt on its mound; every citadel will stand on its proper site. |
| 19Out of those places you will hear songs of thanksgiving and the sounds of laughter and merriment. I will increase their number and they will not dwindle away. I will bring them honor and they will no longer be despised. | 19Thanksgiving will come out of them, a sound of rejoicing. I will multiply them, and they will not decrease; I will honor them, and they will not be insignificant. |
| 20The descendants of Jacob will enjoy their former privileges. Their community will be reestablished in my favor and I will punish all who try to oppress them. | 20His children will be as in past days; his congregation will be established in my presence. I will punish all his oppressors. |
| 21One of their own people will be their leader. Their ruler will come from their own number. I will invite him to approach me, and he will do so. For no one would dare approach me on his own. I, the LORD, affirm it! | 21Jacob's leader will be one of them; his ruler will issue from him. I will invite him to me, and he will approach me, for who would otherwise risk his life to approach me? This is the LORD's declaration. |
| 22Then you will again be my people and I will be your God. | 22You will be my people, and I will be your God. |
| 23Just watch! The wrath of the LORD will come like a storm. Like a raging storm it will rage down on the heads of those who are wicked. | 23Look, a storm from the LORD! Wrath has gone out, a churning storm. It will whirl about the heads of the wicked. |
| 24The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he has fully carried out his intended purposes. In days to come you will come to understand this. | 24The LORD's burning anger will not turn back until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart. In time to come you will understand it. |
