Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,1Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle and singled out for God's good news--
which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures,2which He promised long ago through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures--
concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,3concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh
who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,4and who has been declared to be the powerful Son of God by the resurrection from the dead according to the Spirit of holiness.
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake,5We have received grace and apostleship through Him to bring about the obedience of faith among all the nations, on behalf of His name,
among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;6including yourselves who also belong to Jesus Christ by calling:
to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.7To all who are in Rome, loved by God, called as saints. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world.8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because the news of your faith is being reported in all the world.
For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you,9For God, whom I serve with my spirit in telling the good news about His Son, is my witness that I constantly mention you,
always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you.10always asking in my prayers that if it is somehow in God's will, I may now at last succeed in coming to you.
For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;11For I want very much to see you, so I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you,
that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other's faith, both yours and mine.12that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.
I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles.13Now I want you to know, brothers, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as among the rest of the Gentiles.
I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.14I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish.
So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.15So I am eager to preach the good news to you also who are in Rome.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."17For in it God's righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,18For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,
because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.19since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.20For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.21For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools,22Claiming to be wise, they became fools
and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.24Therefore God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves.
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural,26This is why God delivered them over to degrading passions. For even their females exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.
and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.27The males in the same way also left natural relations with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error.
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,28And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong.
being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,29They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,
slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,30slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;31undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful.
and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.32Although they know full well God's just sentence--that those who practice such things deserve to die--they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them.
