For the choir director. A Psalm of David. O God of my praise, Do not be silent!1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. God of my praise, do not be silent.
For they have opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.2For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without cause.3They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause.
In return for my love they act as my accusers; But I am in prayer.4In return for my love they accuse me, but I continue to pray.
Thus they have repaid me evil for good And hatred for my love.5They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
Appoint a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand.6Set a wicked person over him; let an accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, And let his prayer become sin.7When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer be counted as sin.
Let his days be few; Let another take his office.8Let his days be few; let another take over his position.
Let his children be fatherless And his wife a widow.9Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
Let his children wander about and beg; And let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes.10Let his children wander as beggars, searching for food far from their demolished homes.
Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder the product of his labor.11Let a creditor seize all he has; let strangers plunder what he has worked for.
Let there be none to extend lovingkindness to him, Nor any to be gracious to his fatherless children.12Let no one show him kindness, and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; In a following generation let their name be blotted out.13Let the line of his descendants be cut off; let their name be blotted out in the next generation.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, And do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out.14Let his ancestors' guilt be remembered before the LORD, and do not let his mother's sin be blotted out.
Let them be before the LORD continually, That He may cut off their memory from the earth;15Let their sins always remain before the LORD, and let Him erase all memory of them from the earth.
Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness, But persecuted the afflicted and needy man, And the despondent in heart, to put them to death.16For he did not think to show kindness, but pursued the afflicted, poor, and brokenhearted in order to put them to death.
He also loved cursing, so it came to him; And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.17He loved cursing--let it fall on him; he took no delight in blessing--let it be far from him.
But he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, And it entered into his body like water And like oil into his bones.18He wore cursing like his coat-- let it enter his body like water and go into his bones like oil.
Let it be to him as a garment with which he covers himself, And for a belt with which he constantly girds himself.19Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself, like a belt he always wears.
Let this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, And of those who speak evil against my soul.20Let this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil against me.
But You, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for Your name's sake; Because Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me;21But You, Yahweh my Lord, deal kindly with me because of Your name; deliver me because of the goodness of Your faithful love.
For I am afflicted and needy, And my heart is wounded within me.22For I am afflicted and needy; my heart is wounded within me.
I am passing like a shadow when it lengthens; I am shaken off like the locust.23I fade away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.
My knees are weak from fasting, And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.24My knees are weak from fasting, and my body is emaciated.
I also have become a reproach to them; When they see me, they wag their head.25I have become an object of ridicule to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn.
Help me, O LORD my God; Save me according to Your lovingkindness.26Help me, LORD my God; save me according to Your faithful love
And let them know that this is Your hand; You, LORD, have done it.27so they may know that this is Your hand and that You, LORD, have done it.
Let them curse, but You bless; When they arise, they shall be ashamed, But Your servant shall be glad.28Though they curse, You will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but Your servant will rejoice.
Let my accusers be clothed with dishonor, And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.29My accusers will be clothed with disgrace; they will wear their shame like a cloak.
With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the LORD; And in the midst of many I will praise Him.30I will fervently thank the LORD with my mouth; I will praise Him in the presence of many.
For He stands at the right hand of the needy, To save him from those who judge his soul.31For He stands at the right hand of the needy to save him from those who would condemn him.
