At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus,1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus. "
and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."2This is John the Baptist!" he told his servants. "He has been raised from the dead, and that's why supernatural powers are at work in him."
For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.3For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
For John had been saying to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."4since John had been telling him, "It's not lawful for you to have her!"
Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet.5Though he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, since they regarded him as a prophet.
But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,6But when Herod's birthday celebration came, Herodias's daughter danced before them and pleased Herod.
so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.7So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
Having been prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."8And prompted by her mother, she answered, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter!"
Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests.9Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests.
He sent and had John beheaded in the prison.10So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison.
And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.12Then his disciples came, removed the corpse, buried it, and went and reported to Jesus.
Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities.13When Jesus heard about it, He withdrew from there by boat to a remote place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed Him on foot from the towns.
When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.14As He stepped ashore, He saw a huge crowd, felt compassion for them, and healed their sick.
When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves."15When evening came, the disciples approached Him and said, "This place is a wilderness, and it is already late. Send the crowds away so they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!"16"They don't need to go away," Jesus told them. "You give them something to eat.""
They said to Him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish."17But we only have five loaves and two fish here," they said to Him.
And He said, "Bring them here to Me."18"Bring them here to Me," He said.
Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds,19Then He commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets.20Everyone ate and was filled. Then they picked up 12 baskets full of leftover pieces!
There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.21Now those who ate were about 5,000 men, besides women and children.
Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.22Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.
After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.23After dismissing the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone.
But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary.24But the boat was already over a mile from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them.
And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.25Around three in the morning, He came toward them walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear.26When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and cried out in fear.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."27Immediately Jesus spoke to them. "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.""
Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water."28Lord, if it's You," Peter answered Him, "command me to come to You on the water."
And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.29"Come!" He said. And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus.
But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"30But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid. And beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"31Immediately Jesus reached out His hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
When they got into the boat, the wind stopped.32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's Son!"33Then those in the boat worshiped Him and said, "Truly You are the Son of God!"
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.34Once they crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick;35When the men of that place recognized Him, they alerted the whole vicinity and brought to Him all who were sick.
and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.36They were begging Him that they might only touch the tassel on His robe. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.
