The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem,1The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him.
and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.2They observed that some of his disciples were eating bread with unclean--that is, unwashed--hands.
(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders;3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, keeping the tradition of the elders.
and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.)4When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they have washed. And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches.)
The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?"5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ceremonially unclean hands?"
And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.6He answered them, "Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'7They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands.
"Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men."8Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition."
He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.9He also said to them, "You have a fine way of invalidating God's command in order to set up your tradition!
"For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH';10For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.
but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),'11But you say, 'If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban '" (that is, an offering devoted to God),
you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;12"you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.
thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that."13You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things."
After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:14Summoning the crowd again, he told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand:
there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.15Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him."
"If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."16
When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable.17When he went into the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable.
And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him,18He said to them, "Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don't you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him?
because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and is eliminated?" (Thus He declared all foods clean.)19For it doesn't go into his heart but into the stomach and is eliminated" (thus he declared all foods clean).
And He was saying, "That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.20And he said, "What comes out of a person is what defiles him.
"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,21For from within, out of people's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,
deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.22adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, self-indulgence, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.
"All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."23All these evil things come from within and defile a person."
Jesus got up and went away from there to the region of Tyre. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know of it; yet He could not escape notice.24He got up and departed from there to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but he could not escape notice.
But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.25Instead, immediately after hearing about him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit came and fell at his feet.
Now the woman was a Gentile, of the Syrophoenician race. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.26The woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth, and she was asking him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
And He was saying to her, "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."27He said to her, "Let the children be fed first, because it isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."
But she answered and said to Him, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children's crumbs."28But she replied to him, "Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."
And He said to her, "Because of this answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter."29Then he told her, "Because of this reply, you may go. The demon has left your daughter."
And going back to her home, she found the child lying on the bed, the demon having left.30When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.
Again He went out from the region of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of Decapolis.31Again, leaving the region of Tyre, he went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decapolis.
They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him.32They brought to him a deaf man who had difficulty speaking and begged Jesus to lay his hand on him.
Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;33So he took him away from the crowd in private. After putting his fingers in the man's ears and spitting, he touched his tongue.
and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!"34Looking up to heaven, he sighed deeply and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be opened!" ).
And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.35Immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was loosened, and he began to speak clearly.
And He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they continued to proclaim it.36He ordered them to tell no one, but the more he ordered them, the more they proclaimed it.
They were utterly astonished, saying, "He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."37They were extremely astonished and said, "He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."
