| 1Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. | 1Then Moses and the Israelis sang this song to the LORD: "I'll sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea. |
| 2The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. | 2The LORD is my strength and song, and he has become my salvation. This is my God and I'll praise him, the God of my father and I'll exalt him. |
| 3The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name. | 3The LORD is a man of war, the LORD is his name! |
| 4Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea. | 4"Pharaoh's chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea; his best officers sank in the Reed Sea. |
| 5The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone. | 5The deep covered them, they went down into the depths like a rock. |
| 6Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. | 6Your right hand, LORD, was majestic in strength, your right hand, LORD, shattered the enemy. |
| 7And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble. | 7In the greatness of your majesty you broke down your enemies. You sent forth your anger, it consumed them like stubble. |
| 8And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea. | 8By the breath of your nostrils the waters were piled up, the flowing waters stood up like a hill, the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea. |
| 9The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them. | 9"The enemy said, 'I'll pursue them, I'll overtake them, I'll divide the spoil. I'll satisfy my anger on them, I'll draw my sword, and my hand will bring them to ruin.' |
| 10Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters. | 10"You blew with your breath, and the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty water. |
| 11Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? | 11"Who is like you among the gods, LORD? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in splendor, and working wonders? |
| 12Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them. | 12You stretched out your right hand, and the earth swallowed them. |
| 13Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. | 13"You have led with your gracious love this people whom you redeemed. You have guided them with your strength to your holy dwelling. |
| 14The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina. | 14"The people heard and they quaked, anguish has seized the inhabitants of Philistia. |
| 15Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away. | 15Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified, the nobles of Moab trembled uncontrollably, and all the inhabitants of Canaan melted away. |
| 16Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased. | 16Dread and fear have fallen on them, because of the strength of your arm. They have become silent as a stone, until your people pass by, LORD, until this people you acquired pass by. |
| 17Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established. | 17"You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance. You have made a place where you will reside, LORD. Your own hands have established a sanctuary, LORD. |
| 18The LORD shall reign for ever and ever. | 18The LORD will reign forever and ever." |
| 19For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea. | 19When the horses of Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen went into the sea, the LORD caused the waters of the sea to come back over them, but the Israelis walked through the middle of the sea on dry land. |
| 20And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. | 20Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand and went out with all the women behind her with tambourines and dancing. |
| 21And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. | 21Miriam sang to them, "Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted! The horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea." |
| 22So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. | 22Then Moses led Israel from the Reed Sea and they went to the desert of Shur. They traveled into the desert for three days and did not find water. |
| 23And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. | 23When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water at Marah because it was bitter. (That is why it's called Marah.) |
| 24And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? | 24Then the people complained against Moses: "What are we to drink?" |
| 25And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, | 25Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree, which he threw into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD presented to them a statute and an ordinance, and there he tested them. |
| 26And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. | 26He said, "If you will carefully obey the LORD your God, do what he sees to be right, listen to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, then I won't inflict on you all the diseases that I inflicted on the Egyptians, because I am the LORD your healer." |
| 27And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters. | 27Then they came to Elim where there were twelve springs of water and 70 palm trees, and they camped there by the water. |
