At that time Herod the tetrarch, hearing about the fame of Jesus, 1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
told his servants, "This is John the Baptist! He has been raised from the dead, and that's why these miracles are being done by him." 2and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
Herod had arrested John, bound him with chains, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.3Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
John had been telling him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." 4for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her."
Although Herod wanted to kill him, he was afraid of the crowd, since they regarded John as a prophet.5Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.
But when Herod's birthday celebration was held, the daughter of Herodias danced before the guests. She pleased Herod 6On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much
so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked for. 7that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me, right here on a platter, the head of John the Baptist." 8Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
Under pressure because of his promises and his assembled guests, the king ordered that it be done. 9The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted
So he sent word and had John beheaded in prison. 10and had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother. 11His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
When John's disciples came, they carried off the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.12John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
When Jesus heard this, he left that place and went by boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of it and followed him on foot from the neighboring towns. 13When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
When he got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion for them and healed their sick. 14When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
When evening had come, the disciples went to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and it's already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."15As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."
But Jesus told them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat."16Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
They told him, "We don't have anything here except five loaves of bread and two fish."17"We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.
He said, "Bring them to me." 18"Bring them here to me," he said.
Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 19And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
All of them ate and were filled. Then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 20They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
Now those who had eaten were about 5,000 men, besides women and children.21The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Jesus immediately had the disciples get into a boat and cross to the other side ahead of him, while he sent the crowds away. 22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
After dismissing the crowds, he went up on a hillside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,
By this time the boat was in the middle of the sea and was being battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. 24and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
Shortly before dawn, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. 25Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and cried out, "It's a ghost!" And they screamed in terror.26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
"Have courage!" Jesus immediately told them. "It's me. Stop being afraid!"27But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Peter answered him, "Lord, if it's you, order me to come to you on the water."28"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
Jesus said, "Come on!" So Peter got down out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came to Jesus.29"Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
But when he noticed the strong wind, he was frightened. As he began to sink, he shouted, "Lord, save me!"30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
At once Jesus reached out his hand, caught him, and asked him, "You who have so little faith, why did you doubt?" 31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
As they got into the boat, the wind stopped blowing.32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
Then the men in the boat began to worship Jesus, saying, "You certainly are the Son of God!"33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
They crossed over and came ashore at Gennesaret. 34When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word throughout that region and brought him everyone who was sick. 35And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
They kept begging him to let them touch just the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was completely healed.36and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
