When the day of Pentecost was being celebrated, all of them were together in one place. 1Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly, a sound like the roar of a mighty windstorm came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 2Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting.
They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated, and one rested on each of them. 3And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign languages as the Spirit gave them that ability.4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.
Now devout Jews from every nation on earth were living in Jerusalem. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.
When that sound came, a crowd quickly gathered, startled because each one heard the disciples speaking in his own language. 6When this sound occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
Stunned and amazed, they asked, "All of these people who are speaking are Galileans, aren't they? 7Completely baffled, they said, "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?
So how is it that each one of us hears them speaking in his own native language:8And how is it that each one of us hears them in our own native language?
Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,
Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the district of Libya near Cyrene, Jewish and proselyte visitors from Rome, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
Cretans, and Arabs, listening to them talk in our own languages about the great deeds of God?"11both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!"
All of them continued to be stunned and puzzled, and they kept asking one another, "What can this mean?"12All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"
But others kept saying in derision, "They're drunk on sweet wine!"13But others jeered at the speakers, saying, "They are drunk on new wine!"
Then Peter stood up among the eleven apostles and raised his voice to address them: "Men of Judea and everyone living in Jerusalem! You must understand something, so pay close attention to my words. 14But Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: "You men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, know this and listen carefully to what I say.
These men are not drunk as you suppose, for it's only nine o'clock in the morning.15In spite of what you think, these men are not drunk, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning.
Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:16But this is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel:
In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.17And in the last days it will be,' God says, 'that I will pour out my Spirit on all people, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
In those days I will even pour out my Spirit on my slaves, men and women alike, and they will prophesy.18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
I will display wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke.19And I will perform wonders in the sky above and miraculous signs on the earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
The sun will become dark, and the moon turn to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord. 20The sun will be changed to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
Then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' 21And then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
"Fellow Israelis, listen to these words: Jesus from Nazareth was a man authenticated to you by God through miracles, wonders, and signs that God performed through him among you, as you yourselves know. 22"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to you by God with powerful deeds, wonders, and miraculous signs that God performed among you through him, just as you yourselves know--
After he was arrested according to the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified this very man and killed him using the hands of lawless men. 23this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.
But God raised him up and put an end to suffering of death, since it was impossible for him to be held by it, 24But God raised him up, having released him from the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held in its power.
since David says about him, 'I always keep my eyes on the Lord, for he is at my right hand so that I cannot be shaken.25For David says about him, 'I saw the Lord always in front of me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.
That is why my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices, yes, even my body still rests securely in hope.26Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced; my body also will live in hope,
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades or allow your Holy One to experience decay.27because you will not leave my soul in Hades, nor permit your Holy One to experience decay.
You have made the ways of life known to me, and you will fill me with gladness in your presence.' 28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of joy with your presence.'
"Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and that his tomb is among us to this day. 29"Brothers, I can speak confidently to you about our forefather David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Therefore, since he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him with an oath to put one of his descendants on his throne, 30So then, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne,
he looked ahead and spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah: 'He was not abandoned to Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.' 31David by foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did his body experience decay.
"It was this very Jesus whom God raised—and we're all witnesses of that. 32This Jesus God raised up, and we are all witnesses of it.
He has been exalted to the right hand of God, has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, and has caused you to experience what you are seeing and hearing. 33So then, exalted to the right hand of God, and having received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, he has poured out what you both see and hear.
After all, David did not go up to heaven, but he said, 'The Lord told my Lord, "Sit at my right hand,34For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says, 'The Lord said to my lord, "Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool."' 35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'
"Therefore, let all the people of Israel understand beyond a doubt that God made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!" 36Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ."
When the crowd that had gathered heard this, they were pierced to the heart. They asked Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?"37Now when they heard this, they were acutely distressed and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What should we do, brothers?"
Peter answered them, "Every one of you must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift.38Peter said to them, "Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For this promise belongs to you and your children, as well as to all those who are distant, whom the Lord our God may call to himself."39For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to himself."
Using many different expressions, Peter continued to testify and to plead: "Be saved," he urged them, "from this corrupt generation!" 40With many other words he testified and exhorted them saying, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation!"
So those who welcomed his message were baptized. That day about 3,000 people were added to their number.41So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added.
The believers continued to devote themselves to what the apostles were teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to times of prayer.42They were devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
A sense of fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 43Reverential awe came over everyone, and many wonders and miraculous signs came about by the apostles.
All the believers were united and shared everything with one another.44All who believed were together and held everything in common,
They made it their practice to sell their possessions and goods and to distribute the proceeds to anyone who was in need. 45and they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, as anyone had need.
United in purpose, they went to the Temple every day, ate at each other's homes, and shared their food with glad and humble hearts. 46Every day they continued to gather together by common consent in the temple courts, breaking bread from house to house, sharing their food with glad and humble hearts,
They were praising God and enjoying the good will of all the people. Every day the Lord was adding to their number those who were being saved.47praising God and having the good will of all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number every day those who were being saved.
