1Therefore, you have no excuse—every one of you who judges. For when you pass judgment on another person, you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, practice the very same things. 1Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
2Now we know that God's judgment against those who act like this is based on truth. 2But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
3So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on those who practice these things and then do them yourself, do you think you will escape God's judgment? 3And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
4Or are you unaware of his rich kindness, forbearance, and patience, that it is God's kindness that is leading you to repent?4Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
5But because of your stubborn and unrepentant heart you are reserving wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. 5But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6For he will repay everyone according to what that person has done: 6Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7eternal life to those who strive for glory, honor, and immortality by patiently doing good; 7To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8but wrath and fury for those who in their selfish pride refuse to believe the truth and practice wickedness instead. 8But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9There will be suffering and anguish for every human being who practices doing evil, for Jews first and for Greeks as well. 9Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10But there will be glory, honor, and peace for everyone who practices doing good, initially for Jews but also for Greeks as well, 10But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11because God does not show partiality.11For there is no respect of persons with God.
12For all who have sinned apart from the Law will also perish apart from the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law. 12For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13For it is not merely those who hear the Law who are righteous in God's sight. No, it is those who follow the Law, who will be justified. 13(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14For whenever gentiles, who do not possess the Law, do instinctively what the Law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the Law. 14For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15They show that what the Law requires is written in their hearts, a fact to which their own consciences testify, and their thoughts will either accuse or excuse them 15Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
16on that day when God, through Jesus the Messiah, will judge people's secrets according to my gospel.16In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
17Now if you call yourself a Jew, and rely on the Law, and boast about God, 17Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
18and know his will, and approve of what is best because you have been instructed in the Law; 18And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
19and if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light to those in darkness, 19And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
20an instructor of ignorant people, and a teacher of infants because you have the full content of knowledge and truth in the Law— 20An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
21as you teach others, do you fail to teach yourself? As you preach against stealing, do you steal? 21Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
22As you forbid adultery, do you commit adultery? As you abhor idols, do you rob temples? 22Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
23As you boast about the Law, do you dishonor God by breaking the Law? 23Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
24As it is written, "God's name is being blasphemed among the gentiles because of you." 24For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
25For circumcision is valuable if you observe the Law, but if you break the Law, your having been circumcised has no more value than if you were uncircumcised. 25For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
26So if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the requirements of the Law, his uncircumcision will be regarded as circumcision, won't it? 26Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
27The man who is uncircumcised physically but who keeps the Law will condemn you who break the Law, even though you have the written Law and circumcision. 27And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?
28For a person is not a Jew because of his appearance, nor is circumcision something just external and physical. 28For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29No, a person is a Jew inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, brought about by the Spirit, not by a written law. That person's praise will come from God, not from people.29But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
