Pay attention, heavens, and I will speak; listen, earth, to the words of my mouth. | 1Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. |
Let my teaching fall like rain and my word settle like dew, like gentle rain on new grass and showers on tender plants. | 2My teaching will drop like the rain, my sayings will drip like the dew, as rain drops upon the grass, and showers upon new growth. |
For I will proclaim Yahweh's name. Declare the greatness of our God! | 3For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; you must acknowledge the greatness of our God. |
The Rock--His work is perfect; all His ways are entirely just. A faithful God, without prejudice, He is righteous and true. | 4As for the Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. He is a reliable God who is never unjust, he is fair and upright. |
His people have acted corruptly toward Him; this is their defect--they are not His children but a devious and crooked generation. | 5His people have been unfaithful to him; they have not acted like his children--this is their sin. They are a perverse and deceitful generation. |
Is this how you repay the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Isn't He your Father and Creator? Didn't He make you and sustain you? | 6Is this how you repay the LORD, you foolish, unwise people? Is he not your father, your creator? He has made you and established you. |
Remember the days of old; consider the years long past. Ask your father, and he will tell you, your elders, and they will teach you. | 7Remember the ancient days; bear in mind the years of past generations. Ask your father and he will inform you, your elders, and they will tell you. |
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance and divided the human race, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the people of Israel. | 8When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when he divided up humankind, he set the boundaries of the peoples, according to the number of the heavenly assembly. |
But the LORD's portion is His people, Jacob, His own inheritance. | 9For the LORD's allotment is his people, Jacob is his special possession. |
He found him in a desolate land, in a barren, howling wilderness; He surrounded him, cared for him, and protected him as the pupil of His eye. | 10The LORD found him in a desolate land, in an empty wasteland where animals howl. He continually guarded him and taught him; he continually protected him like the pupil of his eye. |
He watches over His nest like an eagle and hovers over His young; He spreads His wings, catches him, and lifts him up on His pinions. | 11Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, so the LORD spread out his wings and took him, he lifted him up on his pinions. |
The LORD alone led him, with no help from a foreign god. | 12The LORD alone was guiding him, no foreign god was with him. |
He made him ride on the heights of the land and eat the produce of the field. He nourished him with honey from the rock and oil from flint-like rock, | 13He enabled him to travel over the high terrain of the land, and he ate of the produce of the fields. He provided honey for him from the cliffs, and olive oil from the hardest of rocks, |
cream from the herd and milk from the flock, with the fat of lambs, rams from Bashan, and goats, with the choicest grains of wheat; you drank wine from the finest grapes. | 14butter from the herd and milk from the flock, along with the fat of lambs, rams and goats of Bashan, along with the best of the kernels of wheat; and from the juice of grapes you drank wine. |
Then Jeshurun became fat and rebelled-- you became fat, bloated, and gorged. He abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation. | 15But Jeshurun became fat and kicked, you got fat, thick, and stuffed! Then he deserted the God who made him, and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt. |
They provoked His jealousy with foreign gods; they enraged Him with detestable practices. | 16They made him jealous with other gods, they enraged him with abhorrent idols. |
They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known, new gods that had just arrived, which your fathers did not fear. | 17They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods they had not known; to new gods who had recently come along, gods your ancestors had not known about. |
You ignored the Rock who gave you birth; you forgot the God who gave birth to you. | 18You have forgotten the Rock who fathered you, and put out of mind the God who gave you birth. |
When the LORD saw this, He despised them, provoked to anger by His sons and daughters. | 19But the LORD took note and despised them because his sons and daughters enraged him. |
He said: "I will hide My face from them; I will see what will become of them, for they are a perverse generation-- unfaithful children. | 20He said, "I will reject them, I will see what will happen to them; for they are a perverse generation, children who show no loyalty. |
They have provoked My jealousy with their so-called gods; they have enraged Me with their worthless idols. So I will provoke their jealousy with an inferior people; I will enrage them with a foolish nation. | 21They have made me jealous with false gods, enraging me with their worthless gods; so I will make them jealous with a people they do not recognize, with a nation slow to learn I will enrage them. |
For fire has been kindled because of My anger and burns to the depths of Sheol; it devours the land and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains." | 22For a fire has been kindled by my anger, and it burns to lowest Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and ignites the foundations of the mountains. |
I will pile disasters on them; I will use up My arrows against them. | 23I will increase their disasters, I will use up my arrows on them. |
They will be weak from hunger, ravaged by pestilence and bitter plague; I will unleash on them wild beasts with fangs, as well as venomous snakes that slither in the dust. | 24They will be starved by famine, eaten by plague, and bitterly stung; I will send the teeth of wild animals against them, along with the poison of creatures that crawl in the dust. |
Outside, the sword will take their children, and inside, there will be terror; the young man and the young woman will be killed, the infant and the gray-haired man." | 25The sword will make people childless outside, and terror will do so inside; they will destroy both the young man and the virgin, the infant and the gray-haired man. |
I would have said: I will cut them to pieces and blot out the memory of them from mankind, | 26"I said, 'I want to cut them in pieces. I want to make people forget they ever existed. |
if I had not feared insult from the enemy, or feared that these foes might misunderstand and say: 'Our own hand has prevailed; it wasn't the LORD who did all this.'" | 27But I fear the reaction of their enemies, for their adversaries would misunderstand and say, "Our power is great, and the LORD has not done all this!"' |
Israel is a nation lacking sense with no understanding at all. | 28They are a nation devoid of wisdom, and there is no understanding among them. |
If only they were wise, they would figure it out; they would understand their fate. | 29I wish that they were wise and could understand this, and that they could comprehend what will happen to them." |
How could one man pursue a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? | 30How can one man chase a thousand of them, and two pursue ten thousand; unless their Rock had delivered them up, and the LORD had handed them over? |
But their "rock" is not like our Rock; even our enemies concede. | 31For our enemies' rock is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede. |
For their vine is from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poisonous; their clusters are bitter. | 32For their vine is from the stock of Sodom, and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes contain venom, their clusters of grapes are bitter. |
Their wine is serpents' venom, the deadly poison of cobras." | 33Their wine is snakes' poison, the deadly venom of cobras. |
Is it not stored up with Me, sealed up in My vaults? | 34"Is this not stored up with me?" says the LORD, "Is it not sealed up in my storehouses? |
Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay. In time their foot will slip, for their day of disaster is near, and their doom is coming quickly." | 35I will get revenge and pay them back at the time their foot slips; for the day of their disaster is near, and the impending judgment is rushing upon them!" |
The LORD will indeed vindicate His people and have compassion on His servants when He sees that their strength is gone and no one is left--slave or free. | 36The LORD will judge his people, and will change his plans concerning his servants; when he sees that their power has disappeared, and that no one is left, whether confined or set free. |
He will say: "Where are their gods, the 'rock they found refuge in? | 37He will say, "Where are their gods, the rock in whom they sought security, |
Who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you; let it be a shelter for you. | 38who ate the best of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise and help you; let them be your refuge! |
See now that I alone am He; there is no God but Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I heal. No one can rescue anyone from My hand. | 39"See now that I, indeed I, am he!" says the LORD, "and there is no other god besides me. I kill and give life, I smash and I heal, and none can resist my power. |
I raise My hand to heaven and declare: As surely as I live forever, | 40For I raise up my hand to heaven, and say, 'As surely as I live forever, |
when I sharpen My flashing sword, and My hand takes hold of judgment, I will take vengeance on My adversaries and repay those who hate Me. | 41I will sharpen my lightning-like sword, and my hand will grasp hold of the weapon of judgment; I will execute vengeance on my foes, and repay those who hate me! |
I will make My arrows drunk with blood while My sword devours flesh-- the blood of the slain and the captives, the heads of the enemy leaders." | 42I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword will devour flesh--the blood of the slaughtered and captured, the chief of the enemy's leaders!'" |
Rejoice, you nations, concerning His people, for He will avenge the blood of His servants. He will take vengeance on His adversaries; He will purify His land and His people. | 43Cry out, O nations, with his people, for he will avenge his servants' blood; he will take vengeance against his enemies, and make atonement for his land and people. |
Moses came with Joshua son of Nun and recited all the words of this song in the presence of the people. | 44Then Moses went with Joshua son of Nun and recited all the words of this song to the people. |
After Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, | 45When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel |
he said to them, "Take to heart all these words I am giving as a warning to you today, so that you may command your children to carefully follow all the words of this law. | 46he said to them, "Keep in mind all the words I am solemnly proclaiming to you today; you must command your children to observe carefully all the words of this law. |
For they are not meaningless words to you but they are your life, and by them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess." | 47For this is no idle word for you--it is your life! By this word you will live a long time in the land you are about to cross the Jordan to possess." |
On that same day the LORD spoke to Moses," | 48Then the LORD said to Moses that same day, |
Go up Mount Nebo in the Abarim range in the land of Moab, across from Jericho, and view the land of Canaan I am giving the Israelites as a possession. | 49"Go up to this Abarim hill country, to Mount Nebo (which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho) and look at the land of Canaan that I am giving to the Israelites as a possession. |
Then you will die on the mountain that you go up, and you will be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people. | 50You will die on the mountain that you ascend and join your deceased ancestors, just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and joined his deceased ancestors, |
For both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites at the waters of Meribath-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin by failing to treat Me as holy in their presence. | 51for both of you rebelled against me among the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the desert of Zin when you did not show me proper respect among the Israelites. |
Although from a distance you will view the land that I am giving the Israelites, you will not go there." | 52You will see the land before you, but you will not enter the land that I am giving to the Israelites." |
