| 1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus. " | 1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, |
| 2This is John the Baptist!" he told his servants. "He has been raised from the dead, and that's why supernatural powers are at work in him." | 2And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. |
| 3For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, | 3For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. |
| 4since John had been telling him, "It's not lawful for you to have her!" | 4For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. |
| 5Though he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, since they regarded him as a prophet. | 5And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. |
| 6But when Herod's birthday celebration came, Herodias's daughter danced before them and pleased Herod. | 6But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. |
| 7So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. | 7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. |
| 8And prompted by her mother, she answered, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter!" | 8And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. |
| 9Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests. | 9And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. |
| 10So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison. | 10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. |
| 11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. | 11And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. |
| 12Then his disciples came, removed the corpse, buried it, and went and reported to Jesus. | 12And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. |
| 13When Jesus heard about it, He withdrew from there by boat to a remote place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed Him on foot from the towns. | 13When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. |
| 14As He stepped ashore, He saw a huge crowd, felt compassion for them, and healed their sick. | 14And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. |
| 15When evening came, the disciples approached Him and said, "This place is a wilderness, and it is already late. Send the crowds away so they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves." | 15And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. |
| 16"They don't need to go away," Jesus told them. "You give them something to eat."" | 16But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. |
| 17But we only have five loaves and two fish here," they said to Him. | 17And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. |
| 18"Bring them here to Me," He said. | 18He said, Bring them hither to me. |
| 19Then He commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. | 19And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. |
| 20Everyone ate and was filled. Then they picked up 12 baskets full of leftover pieces! | 20And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. |
| 21Now those who ate were about 5,000 men, besides women and children. | 21And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. |
| 22Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. | 22And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. |
| 23After dismissing the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone. | 23And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. |
| 24But the boat was already over a mile from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. | 24But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. |
| 25Around three in the morning, He came toward them walking on the sea. | 25And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. |
| 26When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and cried out in fear. | 26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. |
| 27Immediately Jesus spoke to them. "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."" | 27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. |
| 28Lord, if it's You," Peter answered Him, "command me to come to You on the water." | 28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. |
| 29"Come!" He said. And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus. | 29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. |
| 30But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid. And beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me!" | 30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. |
| 31Immediately Jesus reached out His hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" | 31And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? |
| 32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. | 32And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. |
| 33Then those in the boat worshiped Him and said, "Truly You are the Son of God!" | 33Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. |
| 34Once they crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. | 34And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. |
| 35When the men of that place recognized Him, they alerted the whole vicinity and brought to Him all who were sick. | 35And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; |
| 36They were begging Him that they might only touch the tassel on His robe. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well. | 36And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole. |
