Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you! | 1A Prayer of the Afflicted when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the LORD. Hear my prayer, O LORD! And let my cry for help come to You. |
Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call! | 2Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress; Incline Your ear to me; In the day when I call answer me quickly. |
For my days pass away like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace. | 3For my days have been consumed in smoke, And my bones have been scorched like a hearth. |
My heart is struck down like grass and has withered; I forget to eat my bread. | 4My heart has been smitten like grass and has withered away, Indeed, I forget to eat my bread. |
Because of my loud groaning my bones cling to my flesh. | 5Because of the loudness of my groaning My bones cling to my flesh. |
I am like a desert owl of the wilderness, like an owl of the waste places; | 6I resemble a pelican of the wilderness; I have become like an owl of the waste places. |
I lie awake; I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop. | 7I lie awake, I have become like a lonely bird on a housetop. |
All the day my enemies taunt me; those who deride me use my name for a curse. | 8My enemies have reproached me all day long; Those who deride me have used my name as a curse. |
For I eat ashes like bread and mingle tears with my drink, | 9For I have eaten ashes like bread And mingled my drink with weeping |
because of your indignation and anger; for you have taken me up and thrown me down. | 10Because of Your indignation and Your wrath, For You have lifted me up and cast me away. |
My days are like an evening shadow; I wither away like grass. | 11My days are like a lengthened shadow, And I wither away like grass. |
But you, O LORD, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations. | 12But You, O LORD, abide forever, And Your name to all generations. |
You will arise and have pity on Zion; it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come. | 13You will arise and have compassion on Zion; For it is time to be gracious to her, For the appointed time has come. |
For your servants hold her stones dear and have pity on her dust. | 14Surely Your servants find pleasure in her stones And feel pity for her dust. |
Nations will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory. | 15So the nations will fear the name of the LORD And all the kings of the earth Your glory. |
For the LORD builds up Zion; he appears in his glory; | 16For the LORD has built up Zion; He has appeared in His glory. |
he regards the prayer of the destitute and does not despise their prayer. | 17He has regarded the prayer of the destitute And has not despised their prayer. |
Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD: | 18This will be written for the generation to come, That a people yet to be created may praise the LORD. |
that he looked down from his holy height; from heaven the LORD looked at the earth, | 19For He looked down from His holy height; From heaven the LORD gazed upon the earth, |
to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die, | 20To hear the groaning of the prisoner, To set free those who were doomed to death, |
that they may declare in Zion the name of the LORD, and in Jerusalem his praise, | 21That men may tell of the name of the LORD in Zion And His praise in Jerusalem, |
when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the LORD. | 22When the peoples are gathered together, And the kingdoms, to serve the LORD. |
He has broken my strength in midcourse; he has shortened my days. | 23He has weakened my strength in the way; He has shortened my days. |
“O my God,” I say, “take me not away in the midst of my days— you whose years endure throughout all generations!” | 24I say, "O my God, do not take me away in the midst of my days, Your years are throughout all generations. |
Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. | 25"Of old You founded the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. |
They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, | 26"Even they will perish, but You endure; And all of them will wear out like a garment; Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed. |
but you are the same, and your years have no end. | 27"But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end. |
The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you. | 28"The children of Your servants will continue, And their descendants will be established before You." |
