The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: | 1The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: |
For learning wisdom and discipline; for understanding insightful sayings; | 2for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; |
for receiving prudent instruction in righteousness, justice, and integrity; | 3for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; |
for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man-- | 4for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-- |
let a wise person listen and increase learning, and let a discerning person obtain guidance-- | 5let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-- |
for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles. | 6for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. |
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline. | 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. |
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction, and don't reject your mother's teaching, | 8Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. |
for they will be a garland of favor on your head and pendants around your neck. | 9They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. |
My son, if sinners entice you, don't be persuaded. | 10My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. |
If they say--"Come with us! Let's set an ambush and kill someone. Let's attack some innocent person just for fun! | 11If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for innocent blood, let's ambush some harmless soul; |
Let's swallow them alive, like Sheol, whole, like those who go down to the Pit. | 12let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; |
We'll find all kinds of valuable property and fill our houses with plunder. | 13we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; |
Throw in your lot with us, and we'll all share the loot"-- | 14cast lots with us; we will all share the loot"-- |
my son, don't travel that road with them or set foot on their path, | 15my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; |
because their feet run toward evil and they hurry to shed blood. | 16for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. |
It is useless to spread a net where any bird can see it, | 17How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! |
but they set an ambush to kill themselves; they attack their own lives. | 18These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! |
Such are the paths of all who make profit dishonestly; it takes the lives of those who receive it. | 19Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it. |
Wisdom calls out in the street; she makes her voice heard in the public squares. | 20Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; |
She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates: | 21on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: |
"How long, inexperienced ones, will you love ignorance? How long will you mockers enjoy mocking and you fools hate knowledge? | 22"How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? |
If you respond to my warning, then I will pour out my spirit on you and teach you my words. | 23Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. |
Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention, | 24But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, |
since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction, | 25since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, |
I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you, | 26I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- |
when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you. | 27when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. |
Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will search for me, but won't find me. | 28"Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, |
Because they hated knowledge, didn't choose to fear the LORD, | 29since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. |
were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction, | 30Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, |
they will eat the fruit of their way and be glutted with their own schemes. | 31they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. |
For the apostasy of the inexperienced will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. | 32For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; |
But whoever listens to me will live securely and be undisturbed by the dread of danger." | 33but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm." |
