At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus.1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus,
"This is John the Baptist," he told his servants. "He has been raised from the dead, and that's why miraculous powers are at work in him."2and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him."
For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,3For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
since John had been telling him, "It's not lawful for you to have her."4because John had repeatedly told him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
Though Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd since they regarded John as a prophet.5Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet.
When Herod's birthday celebration came, Herodias's daughter danced before them and pleased Herod.6But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,
So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.7so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
Prompted by her mother, she answered, "Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter."8Instructed by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."
Although the king regretted it, he commanded that it be granted because of his oaths and his guests.9Although it grieved the king, because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.
So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison.10So he sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.11His head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
Then his disciples came, removed the corpse, buried it, and went and reported to Jesus.12Then John's disciples came and took the body and buried it and went and told Jesus.
When Jesus heard about it, he withdrew from there by boat to a remote place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed him on foot from the towns.13Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place. But when the crowd heard about it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd, had compassion on them, and healed their sick.14As he got out he saw the large crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
When evening came, the disciples approached him and said, "This place is deserted, and it is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."15When evening arrived, his disciples came to him saying, "This is an isolated place and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
"They don't need to go away," Jesus told them. "You give them something to eat."16But he replied, "They don't need to go. You give them something to eat."
"But we only have five loaves and two fish here," they said to him.17They said to him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish."
"Bring them here to me," he said.18"Bring them here to me," he replied.
Then he commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.19Then he instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven he gave thanks and broke the loaves. He gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
Everyone ate and was satisfied. They picked up twelve baskets full of leftover pieces.20They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, twelve baskets full.
Now those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.21Not counting women and children, there were about five thousand men who ate.
Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dispersed the crowds.
After dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Well into the night, he was there alone.23And after he sent the crowds away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.
Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them.24Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it.
Jesus came toward them walking on the sea very early in the morning.25As the night was ending, Jesus came to them walking on the sea.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. "It's a ghost!" they said, and they cried out in fear.26When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said, "It's a ghost!" and cried out with fear.
Immediately Jesus spoke to them. "Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."27But immediately Jesus spoke to them: "Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid."
"Lord, if it's you," Peter answered him, "command me to come to you on the water."28Peter said to him, "Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water."
He said, "Come." And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus.29So he said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me!"30But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.32When they went up into the boat, the wind ceased.
Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, "Truly you are the Son of God."33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret.34After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
When the men of that place recognized him, they alerted the whole vicinity and brought to him all who were sick.35When the people there recognized him, they sent word into all the surrounding area, and they brought all their sick to him.
They begged him that they might only touch the end of his robe, and as many as touched it were healed.36They begged him if they could only touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
