Now there was a certain man in Ceasarea named Cornelius, a centurion, from out of Cohort that is called Italian,
Devout and fearing God with all his house, doing many alms to the people and requesting (beseeching) to God through all.
He saw in a vision clearly (apparently, visibly) about around the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God having come to him and having said to him, Cornelius!
And having looked fixedly on him and having become fearful he said, What is it Lord? And he said to him, your prayers and your alms have ascended unto a memorial before God.
And now send men unto Joppa and summon Simon one who is called Peter.
He lodges with the one, Simon a tanner, whose house is beside the sea; {he will tell you what you must do.}
And when the angel having spoken to him had departed, he called two of the house servants, and a devout soldier of those who are attending him,
And having thoroughly related all things to them, he sent them unto Joppa. 9And on the next day as they are journeying and the city approaching, Peter went up upon the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. 10And he became hungry and wanted to eat, however as they were preparing, a trance (ecstasy, greek-ekstasis) happened (became) upon him, 11And he gazes (beholds) heaven opening and a certain implement (vessel) descending like as a great sheet (fine linen cloth) being let down upon the earth by four corners, 12In which were all the quadrupeds (four-footed) and creeping things (crawling reptiles, etc., latin-serpentia-serpents) of the earth, and birds of heaven. 13And a voice came to him, Having risen up, Peter, kill and eat! 14And Peter said, In no way, Lord; because I have never eaten anything common or unclean. 15And a voice again for the second time to him, What God has cleansed, do not call common. 16And this happened upon three times and directly the implement (vessel) was taken up into heaven. 17Now while Peter was perplexed in himself what this vision might be that he had seen, behold the men having been sent by Cornelius stand at the gate and have inquired for the house of Simon. 18And having called out, they asked if Simon who is called Peter is lodged here. 19And Peter was passionately reflecting (in a state of passionate response, meditating, deliberating, latin-cognitante-thinking) concerning the vision and the Spirit said to him, Behold, three men are seeking you; 20But rather having risen go down and go with them, doubting (vacillating, hesitating, distinguishing/judging back and forth) nothing, because I have sent them. 21And Peter having gone down to the men who were sent from Cornelius to him, said, Behold, I am whom you seek; What is the reason (cause) for which you are come? 22And they said, Cornelius a centurion, a righteous (just) man and fearing God, and being well testified of by all the ethnicity of the Jews, was directed by a holy angel to send for you unto his house and to hear a message (rhemata) from (close beside) you. 23Having therefore called them in, he lodged them. And on the next day having risen up, he went out with them and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. 24And on the next day, they entered into Ceasarea. And Cornelius was expecting them having called together his relatives and close (necessary, essential, intimate) friends. 25And as Peter was entering, Cornelius met him having fallen at (upon) his feet, worshipped him. 26However Peter lifted him up, saying, Rise up, I myself am also a man. 27And talking with him, he entered and finds many having gathered together. 28And he said to them, You know (know after long standing upon) how uncustomary (illegal, criminal) it is for a Jewish man to unite himself or come near to one of another (foreign) race. However God has shown to me, not to call man, common or unclean. 29Therefore I also came without hesitation having been summoned. I inquire, then, for what word did you summon me? 30And Cornelius said, Four days ago until this hour, the ninth hour, I was praying in my house and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel, 31And said, Cornelius, you prayer has been heard your alms have been remembered before God. 32Send then unto Joppa and call for Simon who is called Peter; he lodges in the house of Simon a tanner beside the sea; 33At once then I sent to you; and you did good (well) having come. Now then we all are present before (in the sight of) God to hear all things that have been commanded you by the Lord. 34And Peter having opened his mouth said, Upon truth I comprehend (take hold of) that God is not One who shows partiality (accepter of a face), 35but rather in every ethnicity, the one fearing Him and working righteousness (justice) is acceptable to him. 36The word that He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ: He is Lord of all, 37You yourselves know the saying (rhema) having come throughout the whole of Judea, having begun from Galilee after the baptism that John preached: 38How God anointed Jesus from Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; who went about doing good and healing (iomenos) all that were being overpowered (tyrannized, dominated, to exercise rulership down on) under (by) the devil, because God was with Him. 39And we are witnesses of all things that He did in the region of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom also they put to death having hanged him upon a tree. 40This One God raised up in the third day and gave Him to become apparent, 41Not to all the people but rather to witnesses having been designated beforehand (latin-praeordinatis-preordained) by God to us who did eat and drink with Him after His rising from out of the dead. 42And He instructed us to preach to the people and to thoroughly testify that it is He having been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead. 43To Him all the prophets testify, that through His name everyone believing unto Him receives the remission of sins. 44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those hearing the word. 45And all the believers from out of the circumcision as many as had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit has been poured out even upon the ethnicities. 46For they heard them speaking with tongues (glossais) and magnifying God. Then Peter answered, 47Surely there is not anyone able to withhold (prevent) the water to baptize these, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we also have? 48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. [could this be rendered?- And he commanded them in the name of Jesus Christ to be baptized. This is the greek structure but no translations translate as such] Then they asked him to remain some days. |
