So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah and to all those living in Jerusalem: | 2which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: | 2which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, | 2The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, | 2The prophet Jeremiah spoke concerning all the people of Judah and all the residents of Jerusalem as follows: |
For twenty-three years--from the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very day--the word of the LORD has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened. | 3“For twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, to this day, the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken persistently to you, but you have not listened. | 3"From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, these twenty-three years the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened. | 3From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened. | 3"From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until this very day--23 years--the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed. |
And though the LORD has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention. | 4You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the LORD persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets, | 4"And the LORD has sent to you all His servants the prophets again and again, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear, | 4And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear. | 4The LORD sent all His servants the prophets to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed or even paid attention. |
They said, "Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land the LORD gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. | 5saying, ‘Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and evil deeds, and dwell upon the land that the LORD has given to you and your fathers from of old and forever. | 5saying, 'Turn now everyone from his evil way and from the evil of your deeds, and dwell on the land which the LORD has given to you and your forefathers forever and ever; | 5They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever: | 5He announced, 'Turn, each of you, from your evil way of life and from your evil deeds. Live in the land the LORD gave to you and your ancestors long ago and forever. |
Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you." | 6Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.’ | 6and do not go after other gods to serve them and to worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands, and I will do you no harm.' | 6And go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt. | 6Do not follow other gods to serve them and to worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger by the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm. |
"But you did not listen to me," declares the LORD, "and you have aroused my anger with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves." | 7Yet you have not listened to me, declares the LORD, that you might provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm. | 7"Yet you have not listened to Me," declares the LORD, "in order that you might provoke Me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm. | 7Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt. | 7" 'But you would not obey Me--this is the LORD's declaration-- 'in order that you might provoke Me to anger by the work of your hands and bring disaster on yourselves.' |
Therefore the LORD Almighty says this: "Because you have not listened to my words, | 8“Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, | 8"Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Because you have not obeyed My words, | 8Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Because ye have not heard my words, | 8"Therefore, this is what the LORD of Hosts says: 'Because you have not obeyed My words, |
I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon," declares the LORD, "and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting ruin. | 9behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. | 9behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,' declares the LORD, 'and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these nations round about; and I will utterly destroy them and make them a horror and a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. | 9Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the LORD, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations. | 9I am going to send for all the families of the north--this is the LORD's declaration-- 'and send for My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land, against its residents, and against all these surrounding nations, and I will completely destroy them and make them a desolation, a derision, and ruins forever. |
I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, the sound of millstones and the light of the lamp. | 10Moreover, I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the grinding of the millstones and the light of the lamp. | 10'Moreover, I will take from them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. | 10Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the candle. | 10I will eliminate the sound of joy and gladness from them--the voice of the groom and the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. |
This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. | 11This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. | 11'This whole land will be a desolation and a horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. | 11And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. | 11This whole land will become a desolate ruin, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for 70 years. |
The Destruction of Babylon 12"But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, for their guilt," declares the LORD, "and will make it desolate forever. | 12Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the LORD, making the land an everlasting waste. | 12'Then it will be when seventy years are completed I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,' declares the LORD, 'for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it an everlasting desolation. | 12And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations. | 12When the 70 years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation--this is the LORD's declaration-- 'the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt, and I will make it a ruin forever. |
I will bring on that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. | 13I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. | 13'I will bring upon that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in this book which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations. | 13And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations. | 13I will bring on that land all My words I have spoken against it, all that is written in this book that Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. |
They themselves will be enslaved by many nations and great kings; I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands." | 14For many nations and great kings shall make slaves even of them, and I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.” | 14'(For many nations and great kings will make slaves of them, even them; and I will recompense them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.)'" | 14For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands. | 14For many nations and great kings will enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.'" |
The Cup of God's Wrath
(Jeremiah 6:10-21; Jonah 1:4-10; Acts 27:13-26; Romans 1:18-32) 15This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. | 15Thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. | 15For thus the LORD, the God of Israel, says to me, "Take this cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and cause all the nations to whom I send you to drink it. | 15For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. | 15This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take this cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and make all the nations I am sending you to, drink from it. |
When they drink it, they will stagger and go mad because of the sword I will send among them." | 16They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword that I am sending among them.” | 16"They will drink and stagger and go mad because of the sword that I will send among them." | 16And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. | 16They will drink, stagger, and go out of their minds because of the sword I am sending among them." |
So I took the cup from the LORD's hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it: | 17So I took the cup from the LORD’s hand, and made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it: | 17Then I took the cup from the LORD'S hand and made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it: | 17Then took I the cup at the LORD'S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me: | 17So I took the cup from the LORD's hand and made all the nations drink from it, everyone the LORD sent me to. |

all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media; | 25all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; | 25and all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam and all the kings of Media; | 25And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes, | 25all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; |
and all the kings of the north, near and far, one after the other--all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshak will drink it too. | 26all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of Babylon shall drink. | 26and all the kings of the north, near and far, one with another; and all the kingdoms of the earth which are upon the face of the ground, and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. | 26And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. | 26all the kings of the north, both near and far from one another; that is, all the kingdoms of the world which are on the face of the earth. Finally, the king of Sheshach will drink after them. |
"Then tell them, 'This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.' | 27“Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of the sword that I am sending among you.’ | 27"You shall say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "Drink, be drunk, vomit, fall and rise no more because of the sword which I will send among you."' | 27Therefore thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. | 27"Then you are to say to them: This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk, and vomit. Fall down and never get up again, as a result of the sword I am sending among you. |
But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, tell them, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: You must drink it! | 28“And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: You must drink! | 28"And it will be, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you will say to them, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts: "You shall surely drink! | 28And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink. | 28If they refuse to take the cup from you and drink, you are to say to them: This is what the LORD of Hosts says: You must drink! |
See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword on all who live on the earth, declares the LORD Almighty.' | 29For behold, I begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of hosts.’ | 29"For behold, I am beginning to work calamity in this city which is called by My name, and shall you be completely free from punishment? You will not be free from punishment; for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth," declares the LORD of hosts.' | 29For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts. | 29For I am already bringing disaster on the city that bears My name, so how could you possibly go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Hosts. |
"Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them: "'The LORD will roar from on high; he will thunder from his holy dwelling and roar mightily against his land. He will shout like those who tread the grapes, shout against all who live on the earth. | 30“You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them: “‘The LORD will roar from on high, and from his holy habitation utter his voice; he will roar mightily against his fold, and shout, like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. | 30"Therefore you shall prophesy against them all these words, and you shall say to them, 'The LORD will roar from on high And utter His voice from His holy habitation; He will roar mightily against His fold. He will shout like those who tread the grapes, Against all the inhabitants of the earth. | 30Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. | 30"As for you, you are to prophesy all these things to them, and say to them: The LORD roars from heaven; He raises His voice from His holy dwelling. He roars loudly over His grazing land; He calls out with a shout, like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. |
The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD will bring charges against the nations; he will bring judgment on all mankind and put the wicked to the sword,'" declares the LORD. | 31The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD has an indictment against the nations; he is entering into judgment with all flesh, and the wicked he will put to the sword, declares the LORD.’ | 31'A clamor has come to the end of the earth, Because the LORD has a controversy with the nations. He is entering into judgment with all flesh; As for the wicked, He has given them to the sword,' declares the LORD." | 31A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD. | 31The tumult reaches to the ends of the earth because the LORD brings a case against the nations. He enters into judgment with all flesh. As for the wicked, He hands them over to the sword-- this is the LORD's declaration. |
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Look! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth." | 32“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, disaster is going forth from nation to nation, and a great tempest is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth! | 32Thus says the LORD of hosts, "Behold, evil is going forth From nation to nation, And a great storm is being stirred up From the remotest parts of the earth. | 32Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. | 32"This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Pay attention! Disaster spreads from nation to nation. A great storm is stirred up from the ends of the earth." |
At that time those slain by the LORD will be everywhere--from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered up or buried, but will be like dung lying on the ground. | 33“And those pierced by the LORD on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground. | 33"Those slain by the LORD on that day will be from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be lamented, gathered or buried; they will be like dung on the face of the ground. | 33And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground. | 33Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned, gathered, or buried. They will be like manure on the surface of the ground. |
The Cry of the Shepherds 34Weep and wail, you shepherds; roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. For your time to be slaughtered has come; you will fall like the best of the rams. | 34“Wail, you shepherds, and cry out, and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock, for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come, and you shall fall like a choice vessel. | 34"Wail, you shepherds, and cry; And wallow in ashes, you masters of the flock; For the days of your slaughter and your dispersions have come, And you will fall like a choice vessel. | 34Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel. | 34Wail, you shepherds, and cry out. Roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. Because the days of your slaughter have come, you will fall and become shattered like a precious vase. |
The shepherds will have nowhere to flee, the leaders of the flock no place to escape. | 35No refuge will remain for the shepherds, nor escape for the lords of the flock. | 35"Flight will perish from the shepherds, And escape from the masters of the flock. | 35And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape. | 35Flight will be impossible for the shepherds, and escape, for the leaders of the flock. |
Hear the cry of the shepherds, the wailing of the leaders of the flock, for the LORD is destroying their pasture. | 36A voice—the cry of the shepherds, and the wail of the lords of the flock! For the LORD is laying waste their pasture, | 36"Hear the sound of the cry of the shepherds, And the wailing of the masters of the flock! For the LORD is destroying their pasture, | 36A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture. | 36Hear the sound of the shepherds' cry, the wail of the leaders of the flock, for the LORD is destroying their pasture. |
The peaceful meadows will be laid waste because of the fierce anger of the LORD. | 37and the peaceful folds are devastated because of the fierce anger of the LORD. | 37"And the peaceful folds are made silent Because of the fierce anger of the LORD. | 37And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD. | 37Peaceful grazing land will become lifeless because of the LORD's burning anger. |
Like a lion he will leave his lair, and their land will become desolate because of the sword of the oppressor and because of the LORD's fierce anger. | 38Like a lion he has left his lair, for their land has become a waste because of the sword of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.” | 38"He has left His hiding place like the lion; For their land has become a horror Because of the fierceness of the oppressing sword And because of His fierce anger." | 38He hath forsaken his covert, as the lion: for their land is desolate because of the fierceness of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger. | 38He has left His den like a lion, for their land has become a desolation because of the sword of the oppressor, because of His burning anger. |
