Cleansing the Camps
(Leviticus 13:1–46)
1 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
2 צַ֚ו (Command) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וִֽישַׁלְּחוּ֙ (and they shall put out) מִן־ (of) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה (the camp) כָּל־ (every) צָר֖וּעַ (leper), וְכָל־ (and everyone) זָ֑ב (who has a discharge), וְכֹ֖ל (and everyone) טָמֵ֥א (defiled) לָנָֽפֶשׁ׃ (by a corpse).
3 מִזָּכָ֤ר (From male) עַד־ (to) נְקֵבָה֙ (female) תְּשַׁלֵּ֔חוּ (you⁺ shall put out), אֶל־ (toward) מִח֥וּץ (the outside) לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (of the camp) תְּשַׁלְּח֑וּם (you⁺ shall put them) וְלֹ֤א (that not) יְטַמְּאוּ֙ (they may defile) אֶת־ (-) מַ֣חֲנֵיהֶ֔ם (their camps), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (of which) אֲנִ֖י (I) שֹׁכֵ֥ן (dwell) בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ (in the midst).
4 וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ (And did) כֵן֙ (so) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons), יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַיְשַׁלְּח֣וּ (and put them) אוֹתָ֔ם (-) אֶל־ (toward) מִח֖וּץ (the outside) לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה (of the camp); כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) דִּבֶּ֤ר (spoke) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), כֵּ֥ן (so) עָשׂ֖וּ (did) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).
Confession and Restitution
(Luke 19:1–10)
5 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
6 דַּבֵּר֮ (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel), אִ֣ישׁ (a man) אֽוֹ־ (or) אִשָּׁ֗ה (woman) כִּ֤י (when) יַעֲשׂוּ֙ (they do) מִכָּל־ (from all) חַטֹּ֣את (the sins) הָֽאָדָ֔ם (of the man) לִמְעֹ֥ל (to act unfaithfully) מַ֖עַל (an unfaithfulness) בַּיהוָ֑ה (against YHWH), וְאָֽשְׁמָ֖ה (and is guilty); הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ (soul) הַהִֽוא׃ (that),
7 וְהִתְוַדּ֗וּ (and he shall confess) אֶֽת־ (-) חַטָּאתָם֮ (the sin) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשׂוּ֒ (he has committed), וְהֵשִׁ֤יב (and He shall make restitution for) אֶת־ (-) אֲשָׁמוֹ֙ (his trespass) בְּרֹאשׁ֔וֹ (in full), וַחֲמִישִׁת֖וֹ (and a fifth of it) יֹסֵ֣ף (plus) עָלָ֑יו (to it), וְנָתַ֕ן (and give it) לַאֲשֶׁ֖ר (to the one) אָשַׁ֥ם (he has done wrong) לֽוֹ׃ (unto him).
8 וְאִם־ (But if) אֵ֨ין (has no) לָאִ֜ישׁ (the man) גֹּאֵ֗ל (redeemer) לְהָשִׁ֤יב (to whom restitution may be made for) הָאָשָׁם֙ (the wrong) אֵלָ֔יו (for), הָאָשָׁ֛ם (the wrong) הַמּוּשָׁ֥ב (the restitution is) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH), לַכֹּהֵ֑ן (for the priest), מִלְּבַ֗ד (in addition to) אֵ֚יל (the ram) הַכִּפֻּרִ֔ים (of the atonement), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with which) יְכַפֶּר־ (atonement is made) בּ֖וֹ (for) עָלָֽיו׃ (him).
9 וְכָל־ (And every) תְּרוּמָ֞ה (contribution) לְכָל־ (of all) קָדְשֵׁ֧י (the holy things) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יַקְרִ֥יבוּ (they bring) לַכֹּהֵ֖ן (to the priest), ל֥וֹ (unto him) יִהְיֶֽה׃ (shall be).
10 וְאִ֥ישׁ (And every man’s) אֶת־ (-) קֳדָשָׁ֖יו (holy things) ל֣וֹ (unto him) יִהְי֑וּ (shall be); אִ֛ישׁ (any man) אֲשֶׁר־ (whatever) יִתֵּ֥ן (he gives) לַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest), ל֥וֹ (unto him) יִהְיֶֽה׃פ (shall be).
The Adultery Test
11 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
12 דַּבֵּר֙ (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them): אִ֥ישׁ (A man) אִישׁ֙ (a man), כִּֽי־ (when) תִשְׂטֶ֣ה (goes astray) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his wife) וּמָעֲלָ֥ה (and she acts unfaithfully) ב֖וֹ (against him) מָֽעַל׃ (an unfaithfulness),
13 וְשָׁכַ֨ב (and lies) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) אֹתָהּ֮ (with her) שִׁכְבַת־ (lying), זֶרַע֒ (sowing), וְנֶעְלַם֙ (and it is hidden) מֵעֵינֵ֣י (from the eyes) אִישָׁ֔הּ (of her husband), וְנִסְתְּרָ֖ה (and it is concealed) וְהִ֣יא (and she) נִטְמָ֑אָה (has defiled herself), וְעֵד֙ (and witness) אֵ֣ין (there is no) בָּ֔הּ (against her), וְהִ֖וא (and she) לֹ֥א (not) נִתְפָּֽשָׂה׃ (was caught),
14 וְעָבַ֨ר (and if comes) עָלָ֧יו (upon him) רֽוּחַ־ (the spirit) קִנְאָ֛ה (of jealousy), וְקִנֵּ֥א (and he becomes jealous) אֶת־ (-) אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ (of his wife), וְהִ֣וא (and she) נִטְמָ֑אָה (has defiled herself); אוֹ־ (or if) עָבַ֨ר (comes) עָלָ֤יו (upon him) רֽוּחַ־ (a spirit) קִנְאָה֙ (of jealousy) וְקִנֵּ֣א (and he becomes jealous) אֶת־ (of) אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his wife), וְהִ֖יא (and although she) לֹ֥א (not) נִטְמָֽאָה׃ (has defiled herself)—
15 וְהֵבִ֨יא (and shall bring) הָאִ֣ישׁ (then the man) אֶת־ (-) אִשְׁתּוֹ֮ (his wife) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֵן֒ (the priest),
וְהֵבִ֤יא (and He shall bring) אֶת־ (-) קָרְבָּנָהּ֙ (the offering required) עָלֶ֔יהָ (for her) עֲשִׂירִ֥ת (a tenth) הָאֵיפָ֖ה (of an ephah) קֶ֣מַח (of meal) שְׂעֹרִ֑ים (barley). לֹֽא־ (Not) יִצֹ֨ק (he shall pour) עָלָ֜יו (on it) שֶׁ֗מֶן (oil) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִתֵּ֤ן (put) עָלָיו֙ (on it) לְבֹנָ֔ה (frankincense), כִּֽי־ (because) מִנְחַ֤ת (a grain offering) קְנָאֹת֙ (of jealousy) ה֔וּא (it is), מִנְחַ֥ת (an offering) זִכָּר֖וֹן (of memorial), מַזְכֶּ֥רֶת (for bringing to remembrance) עָוֺֽן׃ (iniquity).
16 וְהִקְרִ֥יב (And shall bring her near) אֹתָ֖הּ (-) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest) וְהֶֽעֱמִדָ֖הּ (and set her) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).
17 וְלָקַ֧ח (And shall take) הַכֹּהֵ֛ן (the priest) מַ֥יִם (water) קְדֹשִׁ֖ים (holy) בִּכְלִי־ (in a vessel) חָ֑רֶשׂ (earthen), וּמִן־ (and some) הֶֽעָפָ֗ר (of the dust) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) יִהְיֶה֙ (is) בְּקַרְקַ֣ע (on the floor) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן (of the tabernacle) יִקַּ֥ח (shall take) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest), וְנָתַ֥ן (and put it) אֶל־ (into) הַמָּֽיִם׃ (the water).
18 וְהֶעֱמִ֨יד (And shall have stand) הַכֹּהֵ֥ן (the priest) אֶֽת־ (-) הָאִשָּׁה֮ (the woman) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָה֒ (YHWH), וּפָרַע֙ (and he shall uncover) אֶת־ (-) רֹ֣אשׁ (head) הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (of the woman), וְנָתַ֣ן (and put) עַל־ (in) כַּפֶּ֗יהָ (her hands) אֵ֚ת (-) מִנְחַ֣ת (the offering for) הַזִּכָּר֔וֹן (of the memorial), מִנְחַ֥ת (the grain offering) קְנָאֹ֖ת (of jealousy) הִ֑וא (that is). וּבְיַ֤ד (And in his hand) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) יִהְי֔וּ (shall have) מֵ֥י (water) הַמָּרִ֖ים (the bitter) הַמְאָֽרֲרִֽים׃ (bringing a curse).
19 וְהִשְׁבִּ֨יעַ (And shall put under oath) אֹתָ֜הּ (her) הַכֹּהֵ֗ן (the priest) וְאָמַ֤ר (and say) אֶל־ (to) הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ (the woman), אִם־ (If) לֹ֨א (no) שָׁכַ֥ב (has lain) אִישׁ֙ (man) אֹתָ֔ךְ (with you), וְאִם־ (and if) לֹ֥א (not) שָׂטִ֛ית (you have gone astray) טֻמְאָ֖ה (to uncleanness) תַּ֣חַת (while under) אִישֵׁ֑ךְ (your husband), הִנָּקִ֕י (be free) מִמֵּ֛י (from water) הַמָּרִ֥ים (the bitter) הַֽמְאָרֲרִ֖ים (that brings curses) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these).
20 וְאַ֗תְּ (And you) כִּ֥י (if) שָׂטִ֛ית (have gone astray) תַּ֥חַת (while under) אִישֵׁ֖ךְ (your husband), וְכִ֣י (and if) נִטְמֵ֑את (you have defiled yourself), וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (and has lain with you) אִ֥ישׁ (some man) בָּךְ֙ (in) אֶת־ (-) שְׁכָבְתּ֔וֹ (intercourse) מִֽבַּלְעֲדֵ֖י (other than) אִישֵֽׁךְ׃ (your husband)—
21 וְהִשְׁבִּ֨יעַ (then shall put) הַכֹּהֵ֥ן (the priest) אֶֽת־ (-) הָֽאִשָּׁה֮ (the woman) בִּשְׁבֻעַ֣ת (under the curse) הָאָלָה֒ (of the oath), וְאָמַ֤ר (and shall say) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) לָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (to the woman), יִתֵּ֨ן (Will make) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אוֹתָ֛ךְ (you) לְאָלָ֥ה (an oath) וְלִשְׁבֻעָ֖ה (and a curse) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) עַמֵּ֑ךְ (of your people), בְּתֵ֨ת (when makes) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) יְרֵכֵךְ֙ (your thigh) נֹפֶ֔לֶת (to rot), וְאֶת־ (and) בִּטְנֵ֖ךְ (your belly) צָבָֽה׃ (to swell).
22 וּ֠בָאוּ (And may go) הַמַּ֨יִם (the water) הַמְאָרְרִ֤ים (that causes curses) הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) בְּֽמֵעַ֔יִךְ (into your stomach) לַצְבּ֥וֹת (and make swell) בֶּ֖טֶן (your belly) וְלַנְפִּ֣ל (and rot) יָרֵ֑ךְ (your thigh).
וְאָמְרָ֥ה (And shall say) הָאִשָּׁ֖ה (the woman), אָמֵ֥ן׀ (Amen), אָמֵֽן׃ (Amen).
23 וְ֠כָתַב (And shall write) אֶת־ (-) הָאָלֹ֥ת (the oaths) הָאֵ֛לֶּה (these) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) בַּסֵּ֑פֶר (in the book), וּמָחָ֖ה (and he shall wipe them off) אֶל־ (into) מֵ֥י (water) הַמָּרִֽים׃ (the bitter).
24 וְהִשְׁקָה֙ (And drink) אֶת־ (he shall make) הָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה (the woman) אֶת־ (-) מֵ֥י (water) הַמָּרִ֖ים (the bitter) הַמְאָֽרֲרִ֑ים (bringing a curse), וּבָ֥אוּ (and shall enter) בָ֛הּ (into her) הַמַּ֥יִם (the water) הַֽמְאָרֲרִ֖ים (that brings the curse) לְמָרִֽים׃ (for bitterness).
25 וְלָקַ֤ח (And shall take) הַכֹּהֵן֙ (the priest) מִיַּ֣ד (from the hand) הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (of the woman) אֵ֖ת (-) מִנְחַ֣ת (the grain offering) הַקְּנָאֹ֑ת (of jealousy), וְהֵנִ֤יף (and he shall wave) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּנְחָה֙ (the offering) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וְהִקְרִ֥יב (and bring) אֹתָ֖הּ (it) אֶל־ (to) הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ (the altar).
26 וְקָמַ֨ץ (And shall take a handful) הַכֹּהֵ֤ן (the priest) מִן־ (of) הַמִּנְחָה֙ (the offering), אֶת־ (-) אַזְכָּ֣רָתָ֔הּ (as its memorial), וְהִקְטִ֖יר (and burn it) הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חָה (on the altar), וְאַחַ֛ר (and afterward) יַשְׁקֶ֥ה (he shall make drink) אֶת־ (-) הָאִשָּׁ֖ה (the woman) אֶת־ (-) הַמָּֽיִם׃ (the water).
27 וְהִשְׁקָ֣הּ (And he shall make her drink) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּ֗יִם (the water), וְהָיְתָ֣ה (and it shall come to pass) אִֽם־ (if) נִטְמְאָה֮ (she has defiled herself) וַתִּמְעֹ֣ל (and acted unfaithfully) מַ֣עַל (an unfaithfulness) בְּאִישָׁהּ֒ (against her husband), וּבָ֨אוּ (that will enter) בָ֜הּ (into her) הַמַּ֤יִם (the water) הַמְאָֽרֲרִים֙ (bringing a curse) לְמָרִ֔ים (for bitterness), וְצָבְתָ֣ה (and will swell) בִטְנָ֔הּ (her belly), וְנָפְלָ֖ה (and will rot) יְרֵכָ֑הּ (her thigh), וְהָיְתָ֧ה (and will become) הָאִשָּׁ֛ה (the woman) לְאָלָ֖ה (a curse) בְּקֶ֥רֶב (among) עַמָּֽהּ׃ (her people).
28 וְאִם־ (But if) לֹ֤א (not) נִטְמְאָה֙ (has defiled herself) הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (the woman), וּטְהֹרָ֖ה (and clean) הִ֑וא (she is), וְנִקְּתָ֖ה (then she shall be free) וְנִזְרְעָ֥ה (and she may be sown with) זָֽרַע׃ (seed).
29 זֹ֥את (This) תּוֹרַ֖ת (is the law) הַקְּנָאֹ֑ת (of jealousy), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (when) תִּשְׂטֶ֥ה (goes astray) אִשָּׁ֛ה (a wife) תַּ֥חַת (while under) אִישָׁ֖הּ (her husband) וְנִטְמָֽאָה׃ (and defiles herself),
30 א֣וֹ (or) אִ֗ישׁ (-) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (when) תַּעֲבֹ֥ר (comes) עָלָ֛יו (upon a man) ר֥וּחַ (the spirit) קִנְאָ֖ה (of jealousy), וְקִנֵּ֣א (and he becomes jealous) אֶת־ (of) אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ (his wife). וְהֶעֱמִ֤יד (And he shall have stand) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ (the woman) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), וְעָ֤שָׂה (and shall apply) לָהּ֙ (upon her) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַתּוֹרָ֖ה (the law) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this).
31 וְנִקָּ֥ה (And shall be free) הָאִ֖ישׁ (the man) מֵעָוֺ֑ן (from iniquity), וְהָאִשָּׁ֣ה (and the woman) הַהִ֔וא (that) תִּשָּׂ֖א (shall bear) אֶת־ (-) עֲוֺנָֽהּ׃פ (her iniquity).
