The Nazirite Vow
(Judges 13:1–25)

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  דַּבֵּר֙ (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them), אִ֣ישׁ (a man) אֽוֹ־ (or) אִשָּׁ֗ה (woman) כִּ֤י (when) יַפְלִא֙ (consecrates an offering) לִנְדֹּר֙ (to vow) נֶ֣דֶר (the vow) נָזִ֔יר (of a Nazirite) לְהַזִּ֖יר (to separate himself) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (unto YHWH), 3  מִיַּ֤יִן (from wine) וְשֵׁכָר֙ (and strong drink) יַזִּ֔יר (he shall separate himself). חֹ֥מֶץ (Vinegar) יַ֛יִן (of wine) וְחֹ֥מֶץ (and vinegar) שֵׁכָ֖ר (of strong drink) לֹ֣א (neither) יִשְׁתֶּ֑ה (he shall drink), וְכָל־ (and any) מִשְׁרַ֤ת (juice) עֲנָבִים֙ (grape); לֹ֣א (neither) יִשְׁתֶּ֔ה (shall he drink) וַעֲנָבִ֛ים (and also grapes) לַחִ֥ים (fresh) וִיבֵשִׁ֖ים (or raisins), לֹ֥א (and not) יֹאכֵֽל׃ (eat). 4  כֹּ֖ל (All) יְמֵ֣י (the days) נִזְר֑וֹ (of his separation), מִכֹּל֩ (of all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יֵעָשֶׂ֜ה (is produced) מִגֶּ֣פֶן (by) הַיַּ֗יִן (the grapevine) מֵחַרְצַנִּ֛ים (from seed) וְעַד־ (and up to) זָ֖ג (skin), לֹ֥א (nothing) יֹאכֵֽל׃ (he shall eat).

5  כָּל־ (All) יְמֵי֙ (the days) נֶ֣דֶר (of the vow) נִזְר֔וֹ (of his separation), תַּ֖עַר (razor) לֹא־ (not) יַעֲבֹ֣ר (shall come) עַל־ (upon) רֹאשׁ֑וֹ (his head). עַד־ (Until) מְלֹ֨את (the fulfilling of) הַיָּמִ֜ם (the days) אֲשֶׁר־ (for which) יַזִּ֤יר (he separated himself) לַיהוָה֙ (unto YHWH), קָדֹ֣שׁ (holy) יִהְיֶ֔ה (he shall be); גַּדֵּ֥ל (he shall let grow) פֶּ֖רַע (the locks) שְׂעַ֥ר (of the hair) רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ (of his head).

6  כָּל־ (All) יְמֵ֥י (the days) הַזִּיר֖וֹ (that he separates himself) לַיהוָ֑ה (unto YHWH), עַל־ (-) נֶ֥פֶשׁ (a body) מֵ֖ת (dead) לֹ֥א (not) יָבֹֽא׃ (he shall go near). 7  לְאָבִ֣יו (Even for his father) וּלְאִמּ֗וֹ (or his mother), לְאָחִיו֙ (for his brother) וּלְאַ֣חֹת֔וֹ (or his sister), לֹא־ (not) יִטַּמָּ֥א (he shall make himself unclean) לָהֶ֖ם (-) בְּמֹתָ֑ם (when they die), כִּ֛י (because) נֵ֥זֶר (the separation) אֱלֹהָ֖יו (of his God) עַל־ (is on) רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ (his head). 8  כֹּ֖ל (All) יְמֵ֣י (the days) נִזְר֑וֹ (of his separation), קָדֹ֥שׁ (shall be holy) ה֖וּא (he) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (unto YHWH).

9  וְכִֽי־ (And if) יָמ֨וּת (dying) מֵ֤ת (someone dies) עָלָיו֙ (beside him) בְּפֶ֣תַע (in suddenness) פִּתְאֹ֔ם (suddenly), וְטִמֵּ֖א (and he defiles) רֹ֣אשׁ (head) נִזְר֑וֹ (his consecrated), וְגִלַּ֤ח (and he shall shave) רֹאשׁוֹ֙ (his head) בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) טָהֳרָת֔וֹ (of his cleansing), בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י (seventh) יְגַלְּחֶֽנּוּ׃ (he shall shave it). 10  וּבַיּ֣וֹם (And on day) הַשְּׁמִינִ֗י (the eighth) יָבִא֙ (he shall bring) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) תֹרִ֔ים (turtledoves) א֥וֹ (or) שְׁנֵ֖י (two) בְּנֵ֣י (sons) יוֹנָ֑ה (of a pigeon) אֶל־ (to) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), אֶל־ (to) פֶּ֖תַח (the door) אֹ֥הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of Meeting). 11  וְעָשָׂ֣ה (And shall offer) הַכֹּהֵ֗ן (the priest) אֶחָ֤ד (one) לְחַטָּאת֙ (for a sin offering), וְאֶחָ֣ד (and one) לְעֹלָ֔ה (for a burnt offering), וְכִפֶּ֣ר (and he shall make atonement) עָלָ֔יו (upon him) מֵאֲשֶׁ֥ר (from which) חָטָ֖א (he sinned) עַל־ (regarding) הַנָּ֑פֶשׁ (the corpse), וְקִדַּ֥שׁ (and he shall sanctify) אֶת־ (-) רֹאשׁ֖וֹ (his head) בַּיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַהֽוּא׃ (that). 12  וְהִזִּ֤יר (And He shall consecrate) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH) אֶת־ (-) יְמֵ֣י (the days) נִזְר֔וֹ (of his separation) וְהֵבִ֛יא (and he shall bring) כֶּ֥בֶשׂ (a male lamb), בֶּן־ (a son) שְׁנָת֖וֹ (of a year) לְאָשָׁ֑ם (as a guilt offering); וְהַיָּמִ֤ים (and the days) הָרִאשֹׁנִים֙ (former) יִפְּל֔וּ (shall be lost), כִּ֥י (because) טָמֵ֖א (was defiled) נִזְרֽוֹ׃ (his separation).

13  וְזֹ֥את (And this) תּוֹרַ֖ת (is the law) הַנָּזִ֑יר (of the Nazirite) בְּי֗וֹם (on a day) מְלֹאת֙ (fulfilling) יְמֵ֣י (the days) נִזְר֔וֹ (of his separation). יָבִ֣יא (He shall be brought) אֹת֔וֹ (-) אֶל־ (to) פֶּ֖תַח (the door) אֹ֥הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of Meeting). 14  וְהִקְרִ֣יב (And he shall present) אֶת־ (-) קָרְבָּנ֣וֹ (his offering) לַיהוָ֡ה (to YHWH): כֶּבֶשׂ֩ (Male lamb), בֶּן־ (a son) שְׁנָת֨וֹ (of a year), תָמִ֤ים (unblemished), אֶחָד֙ (one) לְעֹלָ֔ה (as a burnt offering), וְכַבְשָׂ֨ה (and ewe lamb) אַחַ֧ת (one), בַּת־ (a daughter) שְׁנָתָ֛הּ (of a year) תְּמִימָ֖ה (unblemished) לְחַטָּ֑את (as a sin offering), וְאַֽיִל־ (and ram) אֶחָ֥ד (one) תָּמִ֖ים (unblemished) לִשְׁלָמִֽים׃ (as peace offerings), 15  וְסַ֣ל (and a basket) מַצּ֗וֹת (of unleavened), סֹ֤לֶת (of fine flour) חַלֹּת֙ (cakes) בְּלוּלֹ֣ת (mixed) בַּשֶּׁ֔מֶן (with the oil), וּרְקִיקֵ֥י (and wafers) מַצּ֖וֹת (unleavened) מְשֻׁחִ֣ים (anointed) בַּשָּׁ֑מֶן (with the oil), וּמִנְחָתָ֖ם (and their grain offerings), וְנִסְכֵּיהֶֽם׃ (and their drink offerings).

16  וְהִקְרִ֥יב (And shall bring them) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) וְעָשָׂ֥ה (and offer) אֶת־ (-) חַטָּאת֖וֹ (his sin offering) וְאֶת־ (and) עֹלָתֽוֹ׃ (his burnt offering). 17  וְאֶת־ (And) הָאַ֜יִל (the ram) יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה (he shall offer) זֶ֤בַח (as a sacrifice) שְׁלָמִים֙ (of peace offering) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), עַ֖ל (with) סַ֣ל (the basket) הַמַּצּ֑וֹת (of the unleavened bread); וְעָשָׂה֙ (and shall offer) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) אֶת־ (-) מִנְחָת֖וֹ (its grain offering) וְאֶת־ (and) נִסְכּֽוֹ׃ (its drink offering).

18  וְגִלַּ֣ח (And shall shave) הַנָּזִ֗יר (the Nazirite) פֶּ֛תַח (at the door) אֹ֥הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵ֖ד (of Meeting) אֶת־ (-) רֹ֣אשׁ (the head) נִזְר֑וֹ (of his separation), וְלָקַ֗ח (and he shall take) אֶת־ (-) שְׂעַר֙ (the hair) רֹ֣אשׁ (of the head) נִזְר֔וֹ (of his separation) וְנָתַן֙ (and put it) עַל־ (on) הָאֵ֔שׁ (the fire) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) תַּ֖חַת (under) זֶ֥בַח (the sacrifice) הַשְּׁלָמִֽים׃ (of the peace offerings). 19  וְלָקַ֨ח (And shall take) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest) אֶת־ (-) הַזְּרֹ֣עַ (the shoulder) בְּשֵׁלָה֮ (boiled) מִן־ (of) הָאַיִל֒ (the ram), וְֽחַלַּ֨ת (and cake) מַצָּ֤ה (unleavened) אַחַת֙ (one) מִן־ (from) הַסַּ֔ל (the basket), וּרְקִ֥יק (and wafer) מַצָּ֖ה (unleavened) אֶחָ֑ד (one), וְנָתַן֙ (and he shall put them) עַל־ (on) כַּפֵּ֣י (the palms) הַנָּזִ֔יר (of the Nazirite), אַחַ֖ר (after) הִֽתְגַּלְּח֥וֹ (his shaving) אֶת־ (-) נִזְרֽוֹ׃ (his separation). 20  וְהֵנִיף֩ (And shall wave) אוֹתָ֨ם (them) הַכֹּהֵ֥ן׀ (the priest) תְּנוּפָה֮ (as a wave offering) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָה֒ (YHWH); קֹ֤דֶשׁ (holy) הוּא֙ (they are) לַכֹּהֵ֔ן (to the priest), עַ֚ל (together with) חֲזֵ֣ה (the breast) הַתְּנוּפָ֔ה (of the wave offering) וְעַ֖ל (and) שׁ֣וֹק (the thigh) הַתְּרוּמָ֑ה (of the contribution), וְאַחַ֛ר (and afterward) יִשְׁתֶּ֥ה (may drink) הַנָּזִ֖יר (the Nazirite) יָֽיִן׃ (wine).

21  זֹ֣את (This is) תּוֹרַ֣ת (the law) הַנָּזִיר֮ (of the Nazirite) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) יִדֹּר֒ (vows) קָרְבָּנ֤וֹ (the offering) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH) עַל־ (for) נִזְר֔וֹ (his separation), מִלְּבַ֖ד (apart from) אֲשֶׁר־ (whatever else) תַּשִּׂ֣יג (reaches) יָד֑וֹ (his hand) כְּפִ֤י (according to) נִדְרוֹ֙ (the vow) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יִדֹּ֔ר (he takes), כֵּ֣ן (so) יַעֲשֶׂ֔ה (he must do) עַ֖ל (according to) תּוֹרַ֥ת (the law) נִזְרֽוֹ׃פ (of his separation).

Aaron’s Blessing

22  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 23  דַּבֵּ֤ר (Speak) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) וְאֶל־ (and) בָּנָ֣יו (his sons), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), כֹּ֥ה (this is the way) תְבָרֲכ֖וּ (you⁺ shall bless) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). אָמ֖וֹר (Say) לָהֶֽם׃ס (to them).

24  יְבָרֶכְךָ֥ (Bless you) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH),

וְיִשְׁמְרֶֽךָ׃ס (and keep you).

25  יָאֵ֨ר (To shine) יְהוָ֧ה׀ (YHWH) פָּנָ֛יו (cause His face) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (upon you),

וִֽיחֻנֶּֽךָּ׃ס (and be gracious to you).

26  יִשָּׂ֨א (Lift up) יְהוָ֤ה׀ (YHWH) פָּנָיו֙ (His countenance) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (upon you),

וְיָשֵׂ֥ם (and give) לְךָ֖ (unto you) שָׁלֽוֹם׃ס (peace).

27  וְשָׂמ֥וּ (And they shall put) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמִ֖י (My name) עַל־ (on) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַאֲנִ֖י (and I) אֲבָרֲכֵֽם׃פ (will bless them).
