Moses at the Burning Bush
(Acts 7:30–38)

1  וּמֹשֶׁ֗ה (And Moses) הָיָ֥ה (was) רֹעֶ֛ה (shepherding) אֶת־ () צֹ֛אן (the flock) יִתְר֥וֹ (of Jethro) חֹתְנ֖וֹ (his father-in-law), כֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest) מִדְיָ֑ן (of Midian). וַיִּנְהַ֤ג (And he led) אֶת־ () הַצֹּאן֙ (the flock) אַחַ֣ר (behind) הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר (the wilderness), וַיָּבֹ֛א (and he came) אֶל־ (to) הַ֥ר (the mountain) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God), חֹרֵֽבָה׃ (to Horeb). 2  וַ֠יֵּרָא (And appeared) מַלְאַ֨ךְ (the angel) יְהֹוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֵלָ֛יו (to him) בְּלַבַּת־ (in a flame) אֵ֖שׁ (of fire) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) הַסְּנֶ֑ה (of the bush); וַיַּ֗רְא (and he looked), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), הַסְּנֶה֙ (the bush) בֹּעֵ֣ר (was burning) בָּאֵ֔שׁ (with the fire), וְהַסְּנֶ֖ה (and the bush) אֵינֶ֥נּוּ (not) אֻכָּֽל׃ (was consumed). 3  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), אָסֻֽרָה־ (Let me turn aside) נָּ֣א (please) וְאֶרְאֶ֔ה (and see) אֶת־ () הַמַּרְאֶ֥ה (the sight) הַגָּדֹ֖ל (the great) הַזֶּ֑ה (this). מַדּ֖וּעַ (Why) לֹא־ (not) יִבְעַ֥ר (does burn) הַסְּנֶֽה׃ (the bush)?

4  וַיַּ֥רְא (And saw) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) כִּ֣י (that) סָ֣ר (he had turned aside) לִרְא֑וֹת (to look), וַיִּקְרָא֩ (and called) אֵלָ֨יו (to him) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) הַסְּנֶ֗ה (of the bush) וַיֹּ֛אמֶר (and He said), מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses)! מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses)!

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he said), הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (Behold, it is I).

5  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And He said), אַל־ (Not) תִּקְרַ֣ב (do come near) הֲלֹ֑ם (here). שַׁל־ (Remove) נְעָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (your sandals) מֵעַ֣ל (from upon) רַגְלֶ֔יךָ (your feet), כִּ֣י (for) הַמָּק֗וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) אַתָּה֙ (you) עוֹמֵ֣ד (are standing) עָלָ֔יו (on) אַדְמַת־ (ground) קֹ֖דֶשׁ (holy) הֽוּא׃ (is). 6  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And He said), אָנֹכִי֙ (I am) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) אָבִ֔יךָ (of your father), אֱלֹהֵ֧י (the God) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (of Abraham), אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) יִצְחָ֖ק (of Isaac), וֵאלֹהֵ֣י (and the God) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob).

וַיַּסְתֵּ֤ר (And hid) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) פָּנָ֔יו (his face); כִּ֣י (for) יָרֵ֔א (he was afraid) מֵהַבִּ֖יט (to look) אֶל־ (toward) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

7  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), רָאֹ֥ה (Seeing) רָאִ֛יתִי (I have seen) אֶת־ () עֳנִ֥י (the affliction) עַמִּ֖י (of My people) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who are) בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם (in Egypt), וְאֶת־ (and) צַעֲקָתָ֤ם (their cry) שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ (have I heard) מִפְּנֵ֣י (from before) נֹֽגְשָׂ֔יו (their taskmasters); כִּ֥י (for) יָדַ֖עְתִּי (I know) אֶת־ () מַכְאֹבָֽיו׃ (their pains); 8  וָאֵרֵ֞ד (and I have come down) לְהַצִּיל֣וֹ׀ (to deliver them) מִיַּ֣ד (out of the hand) מִצְרַ֗יִם (of Egypt), וּֽלְהַעֲלֹתוֹ֮ (and to bring them up from) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַהִוא֒ (that), אֶל־ (to) אֶ֤רֶץ (a land) טוֹבָה֙ (good) וּרְחָבָ֔ה (and broad), אֶל־ (to) אֶ֛רֶץ (a land) זָבַ֥ת (flowing) חָלָ֖ב (with milk) וּדְבָ֑שׁ (and honey)— אֶל־ (to) מְק֤וֹם (the place) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (of the Canaanite), וְהַ֣חִתִּ֔י (and the Hittite), וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ (and the Amorite), וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י (and the Perizzite), וְהַחִוִּ֖י (and the Hivite), וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃ (and the Jebusite).

9  וְעַתָּ֕ה (And now) הִנֵּ֛ה (behold), צַעֲקַ֥ת (the cry) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בָּ֣אָה (has come) אֵלָ֑י (to Me), וְגַם־ (and also) רָאִ֙יתִי֙ (I have seen) אֶת־ () הַלַּ֔חַץ (the oppression) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with which) מִצְרַ֖יִם (Egypt) לֹחֲצִ֥ים (is oppressing) אֹתָֽם׃ (them). 10  וְעַתָּ֣ה (And now) לְכָ֔ה (come), וְאֶֽשְׁלָחֲךָ֖ (and I will send you) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh), וְהוֹצֵ֛א (and you shall bring out) אֶת־ () עַמִּ֥י (My people), בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ (out of Egypt).

11  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶל־ (to) הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), מִ֣י (Who) אָנֹ֔כִי (am I), כִּ֥י (that) אֵלֵ֖ךְ (I should go) אֶל־ (to) פַּרְעֹ֑ה (Pharaoh), וְכִ֥י (and that) אוֹצִ֛יא (I should bring) אֶת־ () בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ (out of Egypt)?

12  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And He said), כִּֽי־ (Surely) אֶֽהְיֶ֣ה (I will be) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you) וְזֶה־ (and this) לְּךָ֣ (to you) הָא֔וֹת (is the sign) כִּ֥י (that) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) שְׁלַחְתִּ֑יךָ (have sent you): בְּהוֹצִֽיאֲךָ֤ (When you bring) אֶת־ () הָעָם֙ (the people) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (out of Egypt), תַּֽעַבְדוּן֙ (you⁺ shall serve) אֶת־ () הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) עַ֖ל (on) הָהָ֥ר (the mountain) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

13  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold) אָנֹכִ֣י (I) בָא֮ (am coming) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel) וְאָמַרְתִּ֣י (and I will say) לָהֶ֔ם (to them), אֱלֹהֵ֥י (The God) אֲבוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ fathers) שְׁלָחַ֣נִי (has sent me) אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם (to you⁺). וְאָֽמְרוּ־ (And they will say) לִ֣י (to me) מַה־ (What is) שְּׁמ֔וֹ (His name)? מָ֥ה (What) אֹמַ֖ר (shall I say) אֲלֵהֶֽם׃ (to them)?

14  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), אֶֽהְיֶ֖ה (Ehyeh) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (Asher) אֶֽהְיֶ֑ה (Ehyeh); וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and He said), כֹּ֤ה (Thus) תֹאמַר֙ (you shall say) לִבְנֵ֣י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אֶֽהְיֶ֖ה (Ehyeh) שְׁלָחַ֥נִי (has sent me) אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺).

15  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) ע֨וֹד (moreover) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) תֹאמַר֮ (you shall say) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel), יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) אֲבֹתֵיכֶ֗ם (of your⁺ fathers)— אֱלֹהֵ֨י (the God) אַבְרָהָ֜ם (of Abraham), אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) יִצְחָ֛ק (of Isaac), וֵאלֹהֵ֥י (and the God) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob)— שְׁלָחַ֣נִי (has sent me) אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם (to you⁺). זֶה־ (This is) שְּׁמִ֣י (My name) לְעֹלָ֔ם (forever), וְזֶ֥ה (and this is) זִכְרִ֖י (My memorial) לְדֹ֥ר (from generation) דֹּֽר׃ (to generation).

16  לֵ֣ךְ (Go) וְאָֽסַפְתָּ֞ (and gather together) אֶת־ () זִקְנֵ֣י (the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), וְאָמַרְתָּ֤ (and say) אֲלֵהֶם֙ (to them), יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (the God) אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ (of your⁺ fathers) נִרְאָ֣ה (has appeared) אֵלַ֔י (to me)— אֱלֹהֵ֧י (the God) אַבְרָהָ֛ם (of Abraham), יִצְחָ֥ק (of Isaac), וְיַעֲקֹ֖ב (and of Jacob)— לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), פָּקֹ֤ד (attending) פָּקַ֙דְתִּי֙ (I have attended to) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) וְאֶת־ (and) הֶעָשׂ֥וּי (what is being done) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃ (in Egypt). 17  וָאֹמַ֗ר (And I have said) אַעֲלֶ֣ה (I will bring up) אֶתְכֶם֮ (you⁺) מֵעֳנִ֣י (out of the affliction) מִצְרַיִם֒ (of Egypt), אֶל־ (to) אֶ֤רֶץ (the land) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (of the Canaanite), וְהַ֣חִתִּ֔י (and the Hittite), וְהָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ (and the Amorite), וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י (and the Perizzite), וְהַחִוִּ֖י (and the Hivite), וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י (and the Jebusite)— אֶל־ (to) אֶ֛רֶץ (a land) זָבַ֥ת (flowing) חָלָ֖ב (with milk) וּדְבָֽשׁ׃ (and honey).

18  וְשָׁמְע֖וּ (And they will listen) לְקֹלֶ֑ךָ (to your voice), וּבָאתָ֡ (and you shall come)— אַתָּה֩ (you) וְזִקְנֵ֨י (and the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel)— אֶל־ (to) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) מִצְרַ֗יִם (of Egypt), וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֤ם (and you⁺ shall say) אֵלָיו֙ (to him), יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (the God) הָֽעִבְרִיִּים֙ (of the Hebrews) נִקְרָ֣ה (has met) עָלֵ֔ינוּ (with us). וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) נֵֽלֲכָה־ (let us go), נָּ֞א (please), דֶּ֣רֶךְ (a journey) שְׁלֹ֤שֶׁת (of three) יָמִים֙ (days) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (into the wilderness), וְנִזְבְּחָ֖ה (and let us sacrifice) לַֽיהוָ֥ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ (our God).

19  וַאֲנִ֣י (And I) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (know) כִּ֠י (that) לֹֽא־ (not) יִתֵּ֥ן (will permit) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) לַהֲלֹ֑ךְ (to go), וְלֹ֖א (and unless) בְּיָ֥ד (by a hand) חֲזָקָֽה׃ (mighty). 20  וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֤י (And I will stretch out) אֶת־ () יָדִי֙ (My hand) וְהִכֵּיתִ֣י (and I will strike) אֶת־ () מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt) בְּכֹל֙ (with all) נִפְלְאֹתַ֔י (My wonders) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה (I will do) בְּקִרְבּ֑וֹ (in its midst). וְאַחֲרֵי־ (And after) כֵ֖ן (that) יְשַׁלַּ֥ח (he will send out) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺).

21  וְנָתַתִּ֛י (And I will give) אֶת־ () חֵ֥ן (favor) הָֽעָם־ (to the people) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of the Egyptians), וְהָיָה֙ (and it will come to pass) כִּ֣י (when) תֵֽלֵכ֔וּן (you⁺ go), לֹ֥א (not) תֵלְכ֖וּ (you⁺ shall go) רֵיקָֽם׃ (emptily). 22  וְשָׁאֲלָ֨ה (And shall ask) אִשָּׁ֤ה (every woman) מִשְּׁכֶנְתָּהּ֙ (from her neighbor) וּמִגָּרַ֣ת (and from the one dwelling) בֵּיתָ֔הּ (in her house) כְּלֵי־ (articles) כֶ֛סֶף (of silver), וּכְלֵ֥י (and articles) זָהָ֖ב (of gold), וּשְׂמָלֹ֑ת (and clothing). וְשַׂמְתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ shall put them) עַל־ (on) בְּנֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ sons) וְעַל־ (and on) בְּנֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ daughters). וְנִצַּלְתֶּ֖ם (And you⁺ shall plunder) אֶת־ () מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (the Egyptians).
