1 What then will we say? Shall we continue in sin so that grace may abound? What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?
2 Never may it be! We who died to sin, how shall we still live in it? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
3 Or are you⁺ ignorant that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4 We were buried, therefore, with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised out from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also should walk in newness of life. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5 For if we have become united in the likeness of His death, yet also we will be of the resurrection, For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, so that the body of sin might be nullified, for us no longer to be slaves to sin. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—
7 For the one having died has been justified from sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him, Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
9 knowing that Christ, having been raised out from the dead, dies no more; death no longer rules over Him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.
10 For that which He died, He died to sin once for all; but that which He lives, He lives to God. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
11 So also you⁺, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but living to God in Christ Jesus. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your⁺ mortal body, in order to obey its desires. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
13 Neither present your⁺ members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as living out from the dead, and your⁺ members to God as instruments of righteousness. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.
14 For sin will not rule over you⁺, for you⁺ are not under law, but under grace. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? Never may it be! What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!
16 Do you⁺ not know that to whom you⁺ present yourselves as slaves for obedience, you⁺ are slaves to the one whom you⁺ obey, whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God that you⁺ used to be slaves of sin, but you⁺ obeyed from the heart the form of teaching to which you⁺ were delivered up. But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.
18 Now having been set free from sin, you⁺ became slaves to righteousness. and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your⁺ flesh. For just as you⁺ presented your⁺ members as slaves to uncleanness and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now present your⁺ members as slaves to righteousness unto sanctification. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.
20 For when you⁺ were slaves of sin, you⁺ were free from righteousness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.
21 What fruit, therefore, were you⁺ having then in the things of which you⁺ are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!
22 But now, having been set free from sin and having become slaves to God, you⁺ have your⁺ fruit unto sanctification, and the end is eternal life. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
